• Sources look fine.
• Per CorenSearchBot, no copyright violations found. Random googling of three phrases showed no copyright violations (just Wikipedia mirrors or scrapers).
• Early life:
  • Suggest some sort of explanation for "called to the Bar"
• Charge d'affaires:
  • "This did not work, however, because the United States did not send similar instructions to Peru." Surely you mean that the United States did not send similar instructions to their representative in Peru? I hope the US isn't usually in the habit of simply instructing Peru to do something...
  • "mentor to independent Bolivia" any reason we're emphasizing "independant" here?
  • "Appleton's interest in the position was lost" ... do you mean that he lost interest? If so, better to put this in an active voice.
• House:
  • "On March 4, 1851, Appleton was elected to represent Maine's 2nd congressional district for the 32nd United States Congress, running as the Democratic candidate and defeating Whig candidate William Ferguson by approximately 40 votes." probably could use a citation, although it doesn't require one for GA status.
  • "emotion rather than the betterment of the state" which state?
  • Any reason why he didn't run for re-election?
• Assistant:
  • "Appleton was charged with corruption" ... was he charged in a court? Or was he just accused of it through the media? If the second, we should probably use a different word than "charged".
  • "When he commented back to the United States, not much was done, since the rise of the Confederate States." is just totally confusing. Needs cleaning up.
  • Link for "Prince Gortchacow"?

I did some copyediting and adding of links.

I've put the article on hold for seven days to allow folks to address the issues I've brought up. Feel free to contact me on my talk page, or here with any concerns, and let me know one of those places when the issues have been addressed. If I may suggest that you strike out, check mark, or otherwise mark the items I've detailed, that will make it possible for me to see what's been addressed, and you can keep track of what's been done and what still needs to be worked on. It's been over a week, and the nominator hasn't edited. Nor has anyone else. Unfortunately, I need to fail this as I cannot answer some of the above queries without the sources.
