Untitled[edit]

John-Edward Kelly's recordings. It must be emphasized that the "first classical saxophone Cd mayItalic text have been released by John-Edward Kelly. This is an assertion he has made for many years. The date was 1988. The master recordings were made from 18-20 December 1987 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and the CD was released in 1988 (exact date not at my disposal). Someone had earlier asserted in this article (corrected by Antonin1841 on 6 Nov. 2011) that the date was 1985. Indeed, the premiere performances of at least two of the works on the CD were not until 1986 (Karkoff) and 1987 (Maros). The Maros work was only completed on 11 Nov. 1986 (Maros' handwritten and signed manuscript. It is THIS recording (col legno musikproduktion 0647 238) in particular which Mr. Kelly has publicly stated elsewhere was this so-declared first classical saxophone CD. That it was not identified specifically in the Wiki article is therefore not surprising, and may be an indication of the veracity of the source.

This article must be viewed with great suspicion. The list of inaccuracies is too long to print here. The article needs to be totally revised. For starters, he did not begin his musical studies at age 16 at the Cincinnati Conservatory. This is blatantly false. J-E. K's claims, and those who make them in hs behalf now that he is gone, are simply regrettable. He studied primarily at Florida State University, and only after 1979 did he begin any study in Cincy. Sources: 1. Personally knowing John-Edward Kelly for over 20 years, and witnessing his performances while a student at Florida State. 2. Personal conversations and emails with him spanning many years. 3. Knowing a large circle of friends and teachers of J-E K who can verify the errors in this article. 4. Archives at FSU that I have examined that prove otherwise from many statments made here and elswhere about his biography. Antonin1841 (talk) 03:34, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank goodness this article has been cleaned up (to the exent that it has been, which is still not nearly enough)! John-Edward was a flawed individual with a powerful desire to bury aspects of his past that are so easy to uncover, and are frankly innocuous, such as attending FSU, or incredible efforts to give some sort of legitimacy to his musical life by allying himself with non-saxophonists, claiming that at the tender age of 10 or 12 to have been so taken with George Szell as conductor that he decided to become one (!!)... after the age of 45 (!!), or claiming that the only reason he did not become a famous clarinetist was because he left his reeds at home at 17 to audition as 2nd clarinetist in the St. Louis Symphony (which he was positive he'd win).

Joh-Edward Kelly is a very important figure in the history of the "classical" saxophone. His accomplishments are worthy of a serious biography or dissertation. However, John-Edward himself during his life, and any family or asociates who have persisted with rank falsehoods and historic revisionisms that have characterized so much of his "history" for several years now... will only in the long run, diminish a seminal figure in late 20th century and early 21st century saxophone history. Yes, I knew John, heard him frequently in concert, talked frequently live, letter, email, phone, etc. He never tried any of the biographical revisionism with me, because I really did know the facts.
