Deputy Ambassador or Deputy to the Ambassador[edit]

There seems to be a running battle in the editing of this page between those who identify Jeffrey Prescott as the “US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations” and those who identify him as the “Deputy to the US Ambassador to the United Nations”. The former is a Senate confirmed position, the latter is an appointed staff post which does not require Senate confirmation. The previous occupant of the staff post under the Trump administration was Taryn Frideres, a fact I researched, posted but which was then removed. Several revisions of the page have now been made to switch between one title and the other.

I have made such a decision myself previously. The evidence for Prescott holding the (staff) appoint as Deputy to the full Ambassador is to be found on the US Mission to the UN’s own pages which list Prescott as “Deputy to the Ambassador” https://usun.usmission.gov/our-leaders/jeffrey-prescott-deputy-to-the-u-s-representative-to-the-united-nations/, while Ambassador Richard M Mills is serving and still serves as “Deputy Representative” https://usun.usmission.gov/our-leaders/deputy-perm-rep-richard-m-mills/

The two posts do not overlap, and are entirely distinct in function and purpose. There is no real or implied succession. Jeffrey Prescott has not been nominated or confirmed to be the Deputy Ambassador.

The ongoing switches between page editors between one set of facts and the other creates an unnecessary level of conflict and confusion over what should be a very simple matter of identification. Could I ask anyone amending the work title connected with this page to please read the two links above to the two different roles before carrying on using the incorrect title? @Blueglassboy: I completely agree with your comment/assessment. I too find it frustrating. If people did just a simple Google search on Prescott, the first link I find is to his LinkedIn profile and even there it says Deputy TO the ambassador. The odd part is, I don't know if people read the footnote you put in because they still make the change regardless. If you follow this link for "deputy representative" in uscongress.gov, the only one that comes up in recent history is Richard Mills, Jr. both here and here. And as you noted, the US mission to the UN still shows Mills as the deputy representative as of 3/9/22. If the problem persists, maybe take it to an admin board and/or see if the page needs semi-protection. Snickers2686 (talk) 17:36, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
