Name origin notes[edit]

The following is a passage from the bivouac.com page which I personally wrote several years ago; theoretically I surrendered copyright to bivouac when I submitted it, though its contents could be reworded and adjusted; though I have no proof that this is the origin of his "Lolo" name, which could be Iroquoian in origin; if from French patois/CJ it could imply he was a stronger porter:

"Lolo" in the Chinook Jargon means "to haul, to carry" and would seem to come from Métis voyageur slang, i.e. from French "là-là" ("that one there", basically), perhaps used during loading and unloading of freight.

"Mount St. Paul"[edit]

It's unclear to me which mountain this is; there is no Mount Paul or Mount Saint Paul in BCGNIS, though it wouldn't be the first time a common local usage, or an older once-common usage, hasn't made it into BCGNIS; I'll keep my eyes open for clues elsewhere, maybe in other sources....another example is Marysmount or St. Mary's Mount above Lillooet, which are actually only seem-to-be peaks and are really only promontories of ridgelines from Mission Ridge....02:24, 2 April 2010 (UTC)Skookum1 (talk)

Mt Paul is the mountain you see if you look northeast from downtown Kamloops across the reserve - hard to miss. I'm surprised its not in BCGNIS. Never heard of Mt St Paul though. 24.67.129.16 (talk) 08:26, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Archives photo[edit]

The same image as in the book about John Tod, currently linked in the external links, is also on BC Archives - that's the index page, this is the full size image. As it was taken in 1865 it's in the public domain, despite the BC Archives claim that they have copyright on it; they don't under Canadian copyright law, they're only bluffing (their fine print is worded carefully; all they have copyright over is the prints they make off them for sale; they want people to pay for use, but the image itself is public domain.... License to use it, once stripped of its BC Archives border is {{Canada-pd50}} I think....There's also a picture of Sophia Lolo (fullsize).Skookum1 (talk) 00:59, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
