Screenshot

I don't think this screenshot is fair use; for one thing, it would be a simple matter for a user with a G5 to create a legitimately fair use screenshot. Can someone please go ahead and create one? It isn't a screenshot of a webpage, it's a screenshot of an image that was used on a webpage. I think that a screenshot of an image is essentially the original image, which could cause problems. —dcclark (talk) 20:10, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

Interoperability with AIM for Windows

I'm removing the following which was added by 66.25.40.200 and edited by Un sogno modesto:

As of January 29th, 2006 iChat 3.1 no longer supports video conferencing with AIM.

There is nothing on Apple's web site to support this, in fact [1] states that video conferencing is possible with iChat AV 2.1 and later; there's no mention of iChat 3.1 not supporting video conferencing with Windows AIM users. Open Source Alternatives?

I have no problem with open source alternatives etc. -- but the thing is... it really doesn't belong in this article, I don't think. E.g. "Pepsi" is not listed amongst alternatives in the Coke article, etc. - Abscissa 09:04, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

HTML tags bug

There's a bug and it should be described. In the main article (so I did). In the Chax section there's a description of the chax feature that it can do, which is not the same as the bug description itself. So I feel both mentions are worthy. It's related, in that Koz.com, a Raleigh-Durham .com company bought the product line and eventually spun Ichat, Inc. off into a separate company. Approximately a year later, the company was purchased by a Canadian company who then sold the name - but I don't believe any of the technology - to Apple. - ubrgeek 1332 EDT 122908 —Preceding undated comment was added at 18:33, 29 December 2008 (UTC).

User friendliness of the article

I find this article to be very tech oriented. Undoubtedly factually correct - but not really helpful in an encyclopedic way for those who don't know what iChat is and wish to get a simple description. Shouldn't this article start off with a simpler description of the application for laypersons who are not so tech-savvy? And then add all the tech. stuff in the appropriate places that follow? More information needed

which protocols does iChat use for audio/video conferencing
what other programs is it compatible to (audio, video, screen-sharing)
What is the maximum number of audio/video chat participants (I've tried 3 people, works wonderfully!)
users need to know how to integrate MSN, Yahoo and ICQ with it. This is not a how-to, I know, but it needs a link to somewhere.

Possible Improvements to Third party add-ons and user directory

Liked the programs that augment the utility of iChat. However, each likely has a very practical use, essential to certain people. These weren't listed. (The mention of 'Desktop' and 'blue screen' were intriguing.) As an example, iGlasses seems essential to anyone with a laptop. With a Desktop, one can adjust the lighting to be optimal for iChat. However, laptops are used from favorite seats at cafés, park benches, & various chairs about the house. iGlasses allows one who has no control over the lighting to best adjust the image, then save the settings as 'Study Desk, Winter Morning', for example. I'm sure readers would appreciate being made aware of such uses. Geologist (talk) 21:57, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Though this may be more general a topic than 'iChat', one familiar with many enhancements might either emphasize the abilities listed here, or even reorganize the section by the kind of user. Here is an example:

Some programs that enhance iChat can be used synergistically.

1. Corporate employees. Corporate meetings, one can make secure using Zfone and save using Call Recorder. ShowMacster allows one to replace the chat window with a file, such as photo or movie.

2. Families. Call Recorder & ShowMacster allows families, corresponding while apart, to show the day's photos or movie clips, and record chosen parts of the conversation as a Quicktime movie. Because at least one computer will be a laptop, iGlasses allows one to adjust brightness, hue, saturation, & such to match the ambient lighting, whose settings can be saved.

3. Friends. ShowMacster allows one to capture part of the screen and drag this to a chat window. This is useful in teaching another how to use a computer.

4. Other Users. iGlasses can control iSight cameras and USB webcams (using iUSBCam), from iMovie. This, and Call Recorder, permits one to use a cable to quietly take photos & movies of wildlife from a distance, or even down a burrow, using iGlasses' infrared vision. This latter feature can be useful in checking one's home for radiating heat leaks in the winter, or make one's networked laptop a security camera in dark rooms.

I think a rework is needed, what does the "user directory" part of the title even mean anyway? I think any improvement here would help a section that is at this point, filled with old information, and mostly leaning towards advertisements. No. As noted in the history section, iChat uses SIP for A/V, AOL's OSCAR protocol (now semi-open), and XMPP. ADC has more details in the private member section, but can not be linked to as it is currently goes against NDA. --216.244.60.92 (talk) 13:12, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

The protocol descriptions in the introduction ("It uses a XMPP-like protocol, Bonjour, for user discovery, and it also allows for LAN communication.") seem to conflate XMPP and Bonjour, and I believe this is technically incorrect.
