Notability of Merit Scholars[edit]

I would like to know why the section regarding people who have achieved national merit scholarship status was removed. They are all notable, and are more notable than the "rapper" who's only cite-able accomplishment of note is mention in the paper of the very high school he so "notably" attended. Can anyone answer why the people who were recognized as National Merit Scholars were removed, even though their notability was sourced? Should they each have their own wiki site? if so, I will make sure that those who deserve one have one, as I know several have made groundbreaking work in the fields of mathematics and biology. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.249.107.205 (talk) 04:56, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Notability is not based on who is more important than who, but on the WP:BIO standard. With all due credit for their accomplishments as Merit Scholars, without reliable sources about these individuals they do not meet the standard and were removed. Alansohn 05:01, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed from the "notable alumni" section the information about the self-produced rapper. I'm sorry, everyone can become a self-produced rapper, this does not qualify as a notable accomplishment. I added a truly notable alumnus, Val Ackerman, who was the first president of the WNBA (a serious achievement). I will flush out the section on her and add links as soon as I am able, but I wanted to make the change ASAP as I thought it was insulting that she was not even mentioned while someone who is essentially an anonymous face in the crowd was considered "notable" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.249.107.205 (talk) 03:47, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

I noticed an Admin added back the section on the "notable" rapper. There have been many more bands, poets, authors and others who are worthy of more recognition than this self-proclaimed rapper. It should be decided whether a long list bands who have succeed on the college and other circuits be added to the list of notable alums. Should the alum list include individual self-produced "rappers" or people who have actually made contributions to society in academic fields.

There are recent graduates who have already formed their own companies, and others who are are doing grad-school work in the fields of virology and physics. I do not believe that this rapper deserves a place as a notable alum, and I will make it a project to find and list alumni who have made really notable accomplishments. Hopewell has produced many people who have made innumerable contributions to the world, and I hate to think that someone who looks HVCHS up on wiki will only find some high school rapper who apparently bounced from one local school to another, the reason behind this we can only speculate. I pray that the people who have been graduated from Hopewell and have made serious advances in medicine, physics, mathematics and other fields will be considered more notable than this "rapper". It offends me greatly that this person has been deemed "notable" by the moderators, even after deletion. Apparently anyone who can rhyme rhyme with thyme and time is somehow considered a "notable" rapper. Hopewell is a wonderful school and had produced many great citizens. For the "notable" section to contain someone who's life is, in all honesty, of no note whatsoever is an insult to all those people who have gone on to do great things. PLEASE KEEP THE NOTABLE SECTION FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED THINGS OF NOTE!

If we just want to list music acts that came from Hopewell, produced many albums, and had fairly large followings, one would have to include:

Pray For Mojo

Fist Full of Funk

Hot Sauce

Djibouti and the Naked Truth

Col. Grass Harper's funky jug band

  • I made no value judgments as to who is more (or less) notable than any other individual or group. If an individual is notable (as evidenced by having a Wikipedia article) AND the individual has a connection to the school (as described in the included source), then that individual should be listed as an alumnus. If there are other persons or groups who from HVCHS who meet Wikipedia's notability standard, for whom sources exists to demonstrate notability AND a connection to the school, I strongly encourage you to add them here. Removing sourced material from an article is not permitted, regardless of your opinion of the merits and accomplishments of the person. Alansohn 13:34, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to check out my old high schools wiki page, and am shocked that this self published rapper is included as a "notable" alumni. He went to 3 high schools, and only went to HVCHS because he was arrested and kicked out of his second school, he is not a "notable" alumni (I found this information by doing a quick google search). In addition via doing google searches for his rap name or his album title you get a total of 10 hits or each, most of which are duplicates, how does that justify being "notable"? I have more google hits regarding my job as a civil servant for the Federal State Department and I know many other alumni, as noted by the other people that have raised this, that have more accomplishments, why are they not worthy of being included if this guy is? In addition you mentioned he has his own Wikipedia article, he does not, so how is he notable? Finally, the "source" connecting him to the school is an article by the high school newspaper, how does that justify him being "notable" should any alum name that was published in the high school paper be included if thats what makes them "notable?" I am at least the third person who has raised this issue (just judging from this page) please remove him from the notable alumni list, if he does become a notable rapper he deserves to be listed there, but at this point he doesn't. THank you so much CJBabs! I too went to Hopewell and have tried to delete this guys information several times, as you can see from the above conversation. WIKI ADMINS! THE ALUMS OF THIS SCHOOL WANT THIS KID REMOVED FROM THIS PAGE.
