Requested move 9 November 2022[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: No consensus. The article was created at Hometowns, unilaterally moved to Hometowns (album) in 2014, and then unilaterally moved back to Hometowns in 2021. Therefore the default action in the case of no consensus is to retain the current title. King of ♥ 06:29, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

HometownsHometowns (album) – Restore after undiscussed removal of (album) last year. Not primary topic of hometowns. Or just simply delete. In ictu oculi (talk) 20:18, 9 November 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. >>> Extorc.talk 14:33, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment What else on Wikipedia is called "Hometowns"? 162 etc. (talk) 21:03, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • We don't appear to have an article on home towns so unless one can be created the title doesn't seem ambiguous per WP:PLURALPT. Crouch, Swale (talk) 22:18, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Strange that such an important concept has no article other than place of birth, but a totally obscure album does. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:45, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Crouch, Swale:, you're the geographer. Is native place only a concept in rapidly urbanizing societies? Probably yes. In ictu oculi (talk) 10:01, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I guess with that article the album is relatively obscure so disambiguation may be best though I'm not sure as per 162 I'm not sure if its synonymous. This isn't an oppose now and generally I'm in favour of disambiguating when there is a plural form like Dockers but it doesn't seem clear here. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:56, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Crouch, Swale: it may be an issue of the use of English in books largely published in Asia search "hometowns" in GBooks. I would have said home towns but the fact is enough books are saying "hometowns" and the album is not WP:PRIMARY against real world book usage. In ictu oculi (talk) 13:21, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
162, hometown can be pluralized, both in the real world and in en.wp. If plural people have plural place of birth then this exists. And en.wp is supposed to represent WP:RS reality, not Discogs. In ictu oculi (talk) 10:01, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Are you suggesting that Hometowns should become a primary redirect to Place of birth? They're not synonymous, you know. 162 etc. (talk) 14:57, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 18:47, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nominator. The plural "Hometowns" should redirect to the "Hometown (disambiguation)" dab page. Paintspot Infez (talk) 03:18, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Do people generally refer to themselves as having multiple hometowns? As far as I have experienced most people consider themselves as having one hometown. — Ceso femmuin mbolgaig mbung, mellohi! (投稿) 01:55, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a nonsensical word, though — you could easily say "those two people have two different hometowns". Paintspot Infez (talk) 22:53, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The plural hometowns is nonesensical. Shwcz (talk) 21:47, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Lowe's think it makes sense: [1]. Certes (talk) 11:01, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Leaning support given the 2 options at the top of the singular DAB which can be pluralized even though the term isn't yet mentioned. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:13, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:47, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Another in a long line of proposals in the RM backlog which don't seem to have a sensible alternative proposal in mind. This is the only legitimate usage of the plural "hometowns" so should remain as is.  — Amakuru (talk) 12:28, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support. Firstly, "Hometown" is clearly plurable. Second, the album is hardly the primary topic of this term. BD2412 T 20:28, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, because the album is not a primary topic. Hometowns should probably redirect to Hometown (disambiguation), which lists place(s) of birth and native place(s) along with the album. Although not always conclusive, the album name also seems to be derived from the generic term. Certes (talk) 20:51, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody is ever going to type "hometowns" into the search bar expecting to see the place of birth or native place articles. Disambiguation is based on reader-need and encyclopedic entries, not WP:DICDEF.  — Amakuru (talk) 12:19, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Relister's comment There seems to be no consensus at large unless you want to count votes. Even if a case in favor of Support is made, a larger consensus is required. Relisted >>> Extorc.talk 14:33, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: no conflict with other notable topics, plus it already has a footnote directing back to Hometown (disambiguation) so it avoids confusion there. As No such user said above, this is a non-solution to a non-problem. QuietHere (talk) 00:52, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You say that but search "hometowns" in GBooks, and then see WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Book reality and obscure album collide. In ictu oculi (talk) 13:19, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And? It only shows that the plural exists, but none of the mentions is a viable encyclopedic topic. Dab pages are not search indices. No such user (talk) 08:15, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. There's no other article using the title, so no need to shunt readers to a dab page. Anyone bothering to search for or link to Hometowns probably wants the album, and the hatnote takes care of the small number of readers who don't. Station1 (talk) 06:30, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Station1 above. Sergecross73 msg me 21:57, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
