Concern about lead

The article's first sentence states that the issue of homelessness is "San Francisco's most intractable problem" and cites "guide books" as its source (The Rough Guide to San Francisco and Bay Area). Not sure if others see the concern here but it is problematic that the first sentence of an article about a prominent social, economic, and political issue in the United States cites a travel guide to describe the scale of the concern. The sentence also states that the prevalence of homelessness is noted by "visitors and other residents"- how can we maintain an educative page and cite a "visitor" as a reliable source for this information? @Toshalikatyal Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! You are right, it would be better to have some more "authoritative" sources (like news articles) to source these statements. One thing to look for is that one of the standards for an article to exist and not be deleted from Wikipedia is 'notability' (WP:Notability). That means that there must be something special about the homeless situation in S.F. that warrants an article about it, considering the fact that every American city (and likely all cities in the world) have homeless populations. @Avatar317 I agree with @Toshalikatyal, we need to use better sources for the article, especially as it pertains to the introduction of a complicated issue that is wrapped up in more than just the visual aspect of homelessness. Being that it is a prevalent issue for multiple cities in the Bay area, and that homeless persons travel between these cities with the local BART and public transport(sometimes the same individual is homeless in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco over the course of a few months), it makes sense having a more holistic approach to the introduction, and overall as an article. I added to the intro and cited a more credible source--"San Francisco is part of the 9-county Northern Californian Bay Area, containing four of the ten most expensive counties in the United States. With a population exceeding 7 million, the SF Bay Area has an increasingly pricey hosing market that is difficult for many to afford. In San Francisco, a minimum wage worker would have to work approximately 4.7 full-time jobs to be able to rent a two-bedroom apartment." (Arnold, Althea, Sheila Crowley, Elina Bravve, Sarah Brundage, and Christine Biddlecombe. 2014. “Out of Reach 2014: Twenty-Five Years Later, the Affordable Housing Crisis Continues”. National Low Income Housing Coalition.) Please take a look and let me know if I can Improve on anything. I believe there may be value in renaming this page "Homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area", and have San Francisco as one section, in addition to Richmond, Oakland, Berkeley etc. What are your thoughts? @JeshuaKJohn Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! I like the edit you recently did, though I think it needs an introductory sentence.

I don't think it would yet be appropriate to rename this page as you suggest. Be aware that just because an article exists today in Wikipedia does not mean it will continue to exist. Pages that do not meet Wikipedia's standards, most importantly WP:Notability (please read that) may be flagged for deletion. What makes the homeless situation in S.F. (or as you are suggesting, the entire Bay Area) important and "notable" enough that it warrants its own page, considering the fact that every American city (and likely all cities in the world) have homeless populations? The section I added "For anyone who believes, based on their own eyes, that San Francisco has the worst problem with homelessness in the country,...." was partially an attempt to answer that question. I really doubt that it would be acceptable in Wikipedia to have a separate article for "Homeless in CityX" for every city in the US.

I think that finding conditions that make for more homelessness in S.F (or Bay Area) (relative to other cities) or solutions that are not being tried/applied elsewhere would also help to make this subject notable.

Open defecation

I am surprised this article does not include any content regarding open defecation in San Francisco by the homeless population. There have been numerous articles about it written in NBC Bay Area, SF Gate, San Francisco Chronicle, and elsewhere. It has even become an election issue. Perhaps the article can be improved by including content about the issue verified by reliable sources.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 23:59, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Article Title

JeshuaKJohn, Toshalikatyal and I all discussed changing the article from Homelessness in San Francisco to the San Francisco Bay Area in hopes of making the article more encompassing given how homeless individuals are mobile and often move from one city to another. Looking at all the contributions made so far, the article is still very San Francisco centric and I feel like the article should be renamed until adequate contributions are made to represent the entire Bay. California SB-1045: Conservatorship for serious mental illness and substance use disorders

Hi Wikipedians!

Parktj94, A1016neo, JennWen, Mandyhanks are planning to add information about California SB-1045, which aims to set up conservatorships for those who are found “gravely disabled” as a result of an mental illness or impairment due to chronic alcoholism/substance abuse. This bill would have significant potential to impact the homeless population of San Francisco. SB-1045 was just passed and signed by Governor Brown this past September. We propose to include information about the bill and look for news sources that discuss the implementation of a local policy in San Francisco. Please feel free to make additions or changes to our edits along the way and give us any suggestions you may have.

After reading this draft submission, I believe that overall, it reflects a neutral point of view. The section regarding the new legislation SB 1045 was well written and very straightforward without any apparent bias. At first, I thought that the section "Historical Background" seemed to be biased against the individuals mentioned, namely Diane Feinstein, and wondered why the pharmacy student contributors choose to retain this edit from a fellow contributor. However, I looked into the sources and saw that these articles were simply providing history on the common thoughts at that time, and are important details in discussing the progression of the homelessness crisis. --Alisha Soares (talk) 00:17, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

One group member added a very well-thought-out paragraph, detailing the potential pilot program under SB 1045. It was nice that the certain counties and services required within those counties were provided by this group. Another group member added a paragraph describing Mayor London Breed’s contributions to resources for mental health. They also increased the specificity of certain points (i.e. instead of saying just “increase the number,” they instead included specific parameters, “add 70 to 90”). They were also able to add a couple of concluding sentences to the legislative efforts for homelessness in San Francisco, which really rounded out that section. They all were also able to provide good references to support each of their additions. Aside from the larger contributions, the group members also made small edits to grammar for clarity. Overall, the group did a great job of presenting unbiased contributions to their chosen article on SB 1045. The information provided was clear, non-biased, and concise. Are the edits formatted consistent with Wikipedia’s manual of style? If not, specify…

These edits clearly depict the relation of SB 1045 on the issue of homelessness in the SF Bay Area. Editors chose a good location in the article to discuss the bill and outlined the bill well in a paragraph. The only suggestion I have is to merge two very similar sentences together that both discuss how those too mentally ill to care for themselves would be appointed a conservator. It looks like this issue stemmed from separate editors working on different sections. Otherwise, the edited section does follow Wiki's standard manual of style. Edits are made appropriately and have relevant information related to the topic. All the information is added under the relevant heading followed by citations. However, few edits are essentially presenting the same information about the addition of more beds for prospective patients which can be reconciled.Madiha210 (talk) 01:47, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Are the points included verifiable with cited secondary sources that are freely available? If not, specify...

I was very impressed at the quality of secondary sources used by the pharmacy student contributors. Each source is verifiable and available online for easy accessibility. Additionally, the sources used are unbiased and one even includes the senate bill! Each of the sources selected are credible and it is evident that each source was carefully selected. Possible addition of a New Section

Hello everyone, I am a student in GPP and will be adding to the article more specifically adding a new section on the health of homeless people. The bold part is what I will be adding.

The Health of the Homeless The patients approximately 1/5th, that end up in the ED are often times homeless and housing insecure in the past 2 months and 13.8% were living in homeless shelters or on the streets. the ED patients reported that in the past 12 months, 15.5% had spend a night in a shelter and 30.5% had previously been homeless with 25.4% of the patients were at risk of becoming homeless in the next 2 months and 9.1% had been previously evicted in the past year.[8]

The impact of homelessness on physical and social wellbeing

Section needed to be broken up as it was too long, major copyediting and rephrasing for clarity, added a paragraph and split the section into a clear framework for further editing, into sections healthcare, social impact (which is a wip I'm going to be expounding on soon) and the split off "Drug use" section which could use some pictures and more info.
