The unattached freight-cars[edit]

From the way the story is told, it sounds as though the freight-cars would inevitably have run away down the incline, probably causing an accident, whether or not the express was on its way. So failure to attach the cars to the engine would presumably never have been permissible in any shunting operation on an incline (or anywhere else). I think this point needs to be made more strongly.
