Andy and Helen's Relationship[edit]

I would like to discuss the Andy and Helen's relationship section second paragraph.

The first two sentences of that paragraph I can agree with but from there on...we've moved from Mayberry to the Twilight Zone. :)

Andy and Helen did not have a relationship of sweetness and light. The two had frequent disagreements, sudden jealousies, misunderstandings, and lover's quarrels. In "Helen the Authoress", for example, Helen needs considerable time proofing and rewriting her children's book before publication by a Richmond firm. Andy becomes sexually frustrated during the process and tells Helen (in the veiled language of 60s television sitcoms) that if he doesn't get sex from her, he will seek it from someone else. Helen is indignant, of course, and brushes him off. Andy then hooks up Mavis Neff, the town trollop and the two are seen at a remote location in the squad car behaving like trashy teenagers.

I would very much like to see all the references about "sexually frustrated" and the "veiled language" removed from this article. These are the submitters personal opinion and do not reflect the majority view of what was said or done in the episode in question.

In the episode "Helen the Authoress", Andy did wante to spend more time with Helen and yes, he did once ask her "Do you want to run with me or do you want to run with him?" after the character "Roger Bryant" came up from Raleigh to work with her on that, as Andy stated it, "blamed grading manual." Helen quickly chastised Andy for such vulgar language (saying "blamed grading manual") and he apologized.

I believe that this is a long way from "sexually frustrated" or "veiled language."

The last sentence about "Mavis Neff" is incorrect. Andy did go out with her and she did indeed have a bad reputation but there is no mention whatever of them being seen in the squad car at any remote location acting like "trashy teenagers."

I feel I can say with authority the general feeling on what transpired on the referred to episode as I have been the webmaster for Mayberry.com since 1994 and have been the moderator of an Andy Griffith Show mailing list with over 1500 members for the last 16 years.

I would like to change this article but I felt that discussion would be best before any changes as I *do* have a protective view of The Andy Griffith Show.

I think the current wording is hilarious. Hilarity not being encyclopedic, however, it's got to go. Have at it. In the episode where Helen's arrest is exposed, Andy finds love letters from a past beau. Andy does not confront Helen about the arrest article he finds but he does ask her about the boyfriend to learn that he broke up and he now has 6 kids. copyvio[edit]

After the recent edit removing copyvio issues[1], I'm not sure what in there was actually copyvio, or if it was a mass delete of everything from an identified sock. I know that for at least a portion of what was removed, I had done copyediting on it, so I'm not sure what the original source was, nor what the level of verbatim copy existed (because without more info, that can't be determined). Regarding the edit summary note that it was unsourced - that's not the case. Most of it was sourced either as episode summary (primary) or one of two secondary sources. Regardless of all of that, I have started to rework that information back into the article - otherwise it is little more than an episode list. It's kind of key to get most of that back into the article, appropriately source, so that we don't have people thinking Helen and Andy were not married ([2]), since as far as the character is concerned, they were (in Mayberry RFD) ButlerBlog (talk) 14:17, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
