I've redressed most of the top part of the spoiler for a more accurate description of the security section of the game. I fear that my punctuation is a little off, though, and may need a redressing itself.

Here's the truth about Hacker. The reason the walkthrough is wrong is because there are solution variations present in different copies of the game. The order of cities is correct, though. Some copies of the game require that you buy the stocks, and some require that you buy the diamond. Some copies require you give the scarab to the guy in india, and some require you give the statuette of Tut to the guy in india. And some copies require the carving be given to brazil, and some require the camera. And there is also the rumor that on some copies of the game, the time limit is too short unless you modify the games code to let you pass through australia (hack the game). I think this is a myth, and that simple navigating as fast as possible with zero errors will win you the game. I've played Hacker and I don't remember seeing a universal translator. And you can interact with any spies of whatever language, you just have to deduce what they're saying. Incidentally, I haven't seen any solution (or walkthrough) to Hacker, even though Hacker II does. Almkglor 16:43, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is a walkthrough to be found on the net, but it is either wrong or incomplete. I have yet to see or hear of a person who has beaten this game. Also, there is no universal translator, and I will be removing that bit of text accordingly.

It was many years ago, but I completed it. Once you get the hang of it, it's not that complex. It's not surprising you haven't found any complete walkthroughs of the game. It predates the widespread use of the Internet. Walkthroughs tend to be for current games, not games as old as this one. And there is a translator of some (though it may not be a "universal translator"). Before you have it, trying to converse with agents in other countries is almost impossible. I beat the game back in the day. I still have my notes, but curiously they only turn up when I don't need them. My recollection, which differs from the ubiquitous online walkthough, is that you _can_ pass safely through Australia when traveling from China to South America. Alas, I haven't been able to replay this most excellent game on a modern computer, so I can't verify my theory until someone re-engineers the game.MatthewDaly 03:25, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I remembered reading that the tunnel through Australia was commented out, and the game was not winnable unless you poked around in the files on disk, and made the change to enable it.

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Differences in items[edit]

It says: "Note that different copies of the game, even on the same computer platform, have differences in which items the spies want." How is this possible? Surely there was a standard master tape/disk for each platform which was duplicated identically for sale. Perhaps the wiki writer here was confused and meant to say that the item requirements are chosen randomly for each game session?
