Earlier HALs[edit]

Didn't Windows (and probably some other operating systems) have a HAL before this thing, even if it did the same thing? --CCFreak2K 09:28, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Windows NT - and other operating systems - have hardware abstraction layers, but they don't do the same thing as the freedesktop.org HAL; they exist at a much lower layer. The name chosen by freedesktop.org can be a bit confusing, for that reason. Guy Harris 17:53, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HAL and DeviceKit[edit]

DeviceKit isn't the replacement of HAL, HAL will be replaced by udev (lib udev and gudev) http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.hotplug.devel

Bias[edit]

The whole world is not Lignux. Hal is not "being replaced by udev" on non-Lignux systems, since there is no such thing as "udev" on non-Lignux systems. 121a0012 (talk) 17:31, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since at least one non-"Lignux" OS still relies on HAL, I agree the article is biased. It cannot be said "HAL was..." nor can it be declared "obsolete". I'm tagging this article as biased, this should be discussed further... Arny (talk) 13:10, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
