Source: As a Research Assistant he carried out special work on the taxonomy of the rice and obtained Ph.D. degree from the Patna University in 1943 (the first PhD degree in Botany in Bihar and Orissa). In rice research he was responsible for evolving a number of important varieties of rice which became a household name in Orissa, like T-1145, T-141 and T-1242. Characteristically, Chalam gave away this prize money to the National Defence Fund at the time of Indo-Pakistan war in 1965 I'm afraid that even though the subjects of the articles seem to be different, the language in use at that site is still governed by copyright unless it is explicitly placed in public domain or licensed compatibly with our own.
