Deaf student incident[edit]

I see that an source was added regarding the incident with the deaf student. That's helpful, but it seems like a relatively small incident in the grand scheme of things - the sort of boneheaded move that schools everywhere seem to make from time to time and which receive fleeting new coverage. I don't think anyone - including the source - could really claim that this is what school district is best know for. I wouldn't be opposed to perhaps adding this in a "controversies" section, but I would need to less strident.--Kubigula (talk) 03:48, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Had you or anyone outside of Grand island even ever heard of this place prior to this incident making the NATIONAL news. I'd note that as "best known!" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.105.118.42 (talk) 21:04, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We try to take a longer view of these things. It may be "best known" for a month or two, but it will not have any lasting impact. Something like this will be totally forgotten in a year or less.--Kubigula (talk) 17:00, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
An encyclopedia should not be a place where bad policy, dumb ideas or errors should be enshrined as a wall of shame: as Kubigula says, we should take a broader view and focus on enduring facts. We have this as policy on biographies, and it's a reasonable position to take on other topics. We often encounter such narrowly-focused edits about schools or school systems, and they are almost always of no lasting consequence. Acroterion (talk) 17:27, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
