Lack of references / citations[edit]

Point of view regading the term "leech" and "lurker" ... those terms are unneccessary / do not apply to bittorrent in general (for instance: 99% of people that use linux never publish new content, and 100% of World of Warcraft end users would be considered lurkers or leeches)... More care could be used to use gender-neutral pronouns (instead of "he" all over the place)... Citing sources / verifibility would be a good thing also. Here are some policies for anyone that cares to fix this article:

"Leech" is not used in any general sense with regard to BitTorrent, but in the specialized sense that Bram Cohen created for it. A Leech or Leecher is anyone participating in the swarm who does not possess a complete copy of the torrent material -- anyone who is not a seed or seeder, in other words.

It is generally understood that this is entirely distinct from its previous usage as a pejorative term. Notwithstanding that, use of the term 'leecher" is now generally deprecated in favor of redefining "peer" to this meaning, along with the understanding that "peer" no longer means any member of the swarm (which included seeders), but now specifically excludes seeders unless incorporated by mention or by context.

This is not an improvement to clarity of communication.

While I have no specific citations for this, neither does this entire page.

Bram Cohen is known to prefer the term "downloader". Is it safe to replace "leech" with the less loaded "downloader" throughout where it doesn't refer specifically to a low-ratio downloader? --Damian Yerrick (talk) 12:43, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
