birthdate

Websites seem to disagree about whether Swanson was born in 1897 or 1899. More have 1899 as the year of birth. Since her official website says 1899, I've fixed the birth date in the article. -- Minesweeper 00:46 4 Jun 2003 (UTC)

She says 1899 in her autobiography, and it's the date on her tombstone [1]. People on here seem to believe the 1897 date simply because it says so on IMDB, but as a regular user of (and contributor to) that site for the past 4 years I can honestly say that it's far from perfect and certainly not as reliable as people seem to think. Both her death certificate and her gravestone have 1899. Shouldn't that be proof enough to change the date to 1899? Hotwine8 15:59, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

In citing the year of Gloria's birth date on her death certificate, it is almost certain the NY Dept. of Health just asked her widower, William Dufty,

when she was born, and he just told them what she had told him. But there is absolutely no question that she was born in 1897. It was a very, very common practice for women at that time, and even past that time, to shave off a little time. Jayne Mansfield, who actually never lived to be old, was able to pull a fast one when issued a passport, which, she told friends, made her feel younger. The best example is "Valley of the Dolls" author Jacqueline Susann, who cornered Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at a party and coaxed him to change her birthday on her passport; he said there was nothing he could do. Still, the urn containing her ashes bears her birth year as 1921, as her widower Irving Mansfield said in his book, "the year she chose for herself." She was born in 1918. Accommodating his wife, Mansfield knew that even dead, Jackie would feel younger! It sounds crazy, but it's a diva thing. She was NOT born in 1897. All the records on ancestry.com list her as being born in 1899. She was born in 1899, because I found her on a 1913 passenger list from Ancestry.com along with her mother Addie Swanson, and they did live in Puerto Rico which this records states. A 14 year old girl has no reason to lie about her age. All of her passports state 1899 as her birth year also.

All the above are fair arguments. In all probability the year of birth was 1899, but just b/c that year appears on her gravestone is not a guarantee, it should be borne in mind. Gravestones are not always reliable (vis-a-vis Bing Crosby and Audrey Meadows both of whose gravestones bore inaccurate years of birth (Crosby was actually born in 1903 and Meadows in 1922). Also Swanson's death certificate cited above, although it gives 1899 as year of birth also states that "approximate age" at death was 85, which would mean a year of birth of 1898! Category: Scientologist?

Just how dedicated was she as a scientologist? I walked into a scientology center in 1971, bought one book, and have been on their mailing list for the past 34 years. I ammmuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum most definitely not a scientologist, thought their standard procedure is to list people like me as believers. I'd like to see a little proof that she was truly dedicated to scientology. Please note that I have omitted my name stamp while discussing scientology; this is on purpose!hot stuff!!!!!!!!!!

Many online articles claim that an early attempt to bring Frank Herbert's Dune to film by Alejandro Jodorowsky involved Gloria Swanson. (I figure that she would have been cast as the Bene Gesserit Mother.) Can anyone confirm this?

Corrupted paragraph

The following paragraph seems to be a combination of two unrelated paragraph fragments. Can anyone fix? "Despite reports that "dirty" words can be read on the characters' lips, Swanson claims the censors went over everything with a fine-toothed comb.[30] However, Swanson admitted that one line she was shouting at Davidson went, "You'd rip the wings off of a butterfly, you son of a bitch!" when recounting a conversation with Walsh later in life.[31] If the word rain was used in a title, they asked that it be removed. Hays Code

How could a 1928 film challenge the Hays Code if the code was (according to wikipedia) only introduced in 1930?

Wikipedia and other sources says the code was written by Joseph Breen in 1930, but not pukt into full force ntil 1934. 1981 Television Appearance

Didn't Gloria Swanson star with Brooke Shields and other women of varying ages (including Joan Collins) in a 1981 or 1982 television special, "Beauty at Any Age"? I remember the show but have not been able to find any reference to it.

While each sentence is OK, this is gibberish, meaningless. I feel like an outsider listening to an inside joke. Needs context or deletion:

  • Per WP:PRIMARY removed all citations of her autobiography "Swanson on Swanson" as a source
  • Removed GF fancruft that did not seem relevant to her career or life achievements
  • Citation needed tags taken care of
  • Updated sourcing overall
  • Further reading section: Some of the titles were used as reference material, and moved into the Bibliography section. A lot of titles on yoga, Joseph Kennedy and non-specific books on show business and architecture were removed.
  • See also - Sugar Blues, the book written by Swanson's last husband, removed from "Further reading" and is linked to its own Wikipedia page.
  • Removed unsourced statement: "The second-largest collection of Swanson materials is held in the family archives of Timothy A. Rooks." Repeated verbatim (unsourced) on various websites, there is no definition of what "second-largest" would be, and no verification that it ever existed. Harry Ransom Center (HRC) at UT-Austin bought most of Swanson's "artwork, audio discs, bound volumes, film, galleys, microfilm, posters, and memorabilia" prior to her death. That which was not purchased before her death, was either privately gifted to the HRC or purchased by them by 1988. Rooks was the literary agent to Swanson's final husband William Dufty, who died in 2002. The statement is word for word from Duffy's obit, but whatever he held in 2002 could now be anywhere, or no longer even exist .

The current article begins :- "Gloria May Josephine Swanson (March 27, 1899 – April 4, 1983) was ..." The current picture title is "Gloria Swanson" The current picture description begins "Glory May Josephine Swanson" Which is correct? AnnaComnemna (talk) 02:50, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

They they both are, in accordance with how biographies are written. The lead sentence has the full birth name, as usually does the first sentence in the first section, while the rest of the article is the commonly known name. — Maile (talk) 10:43, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
