Already Premiered In New Zealand

Question - please answer....

I've heard "Girlfriend" on the radio in Southwest Victoria, Australia (on Mixx FM) and on Video Hits on Channel 10 Australia, where Lavigne sings:

"I'll be the mother (Blank)-ing princess"

...which is clearly an expletive. Should I say in the article, "The single also obtained a Parental Advisory sticker"? PLEASE HELP! Jetstar888 05:26, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

You're correct that the single does contain explicit language, but I haven't actually seen a physical copy of the single yet, so I'm not sure whether it definitely does bear a parental advisory label. However, to digress, even if the single does bear a sticker, these days many recordings contain language that may be offensive to some people, so I'm not sure that it's really notable for a Wikipedia article. Besides, the word "fuck" is no longer considered offensive per se, at least by the legal system in NSW, so if Wikipedia editors make a big deal out of such language, we are imposing our own values on what is intended to be an objective article. As far as I can tell, Girlfriend is also the first time Lavigne has used the word "delicious" in a song, but mentioning that in the article would just look ridiculous, so why should "fuck" be treated any different? — Phil500 (Talk / Contribs) 07:25, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I suppose that was a little harsh. I didn't mean to offend you, and by all means don't let this deter you from adding something that you feel might be relevant. My comment was not just directed at you, but also at a number of other editors who have been adding information to this article that is not really objective - I seem to recall a couple of times that this article has been altered to mention the offensive language in a fairly judgemental way, and I was just trying to prevent that from happening again.--Phil500 (Talk / Contribs) 07:43, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Who took out the itunes on the charts I know that they are not Conventional but digital downloads are important because it a new way of measuring the songs success Avril Lavigne’s girlfriend debuted number 1 in Canada and number 2 in the US

It doesn't really matter that the song was particularly successful on the itunes chart, the point is that Wikipedia policy clearly states that itunes chart data should not be used - see WP:CHARTS. Thank you for clearing that up, my fault i see what your saying because itunes is an independent company and the page would be overfull with companys such as amazon and wal-mart ect. Does Billbord have a digital download countdown ? If not there should be one.

There are two, Hot Digital Songs and Hot Digital Tracks. They also shouldn't be used in the table. The table is for showing a song's performance in various countries and genres. Using the Billboard Hot 100 gives one a much better understanding of a song's performance since it takes airplay, singles sales, and digital downloads into consideration. Actually, it might be OK to use either one of the download charts if the single fails to chart on the proper Hot 100, but does appear on one of the component charts - WP:CHARTS indicates this. She has released 7 so far in Mandarin, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian and English. I read somewhere she tried Hindu but it didnt work out

I thought it went to number one in Japan. Did it not ? and if it did way is it not included ?

Don't know if this is relevant or not, just want to make sure. By the way, this show is huge in Japan and Southeast Asia.

No, Billboard charts are record charts. The iTunes one is just a list of most downloaded songs on iTunes. Considering the Billboard ones are official charts and already take into account iTunes downloads, there's no reason to include iTunes lists which won't be verifiable in a couple of weeks. Dropping quotation about song

I removed this:

because it was uncited. I searched via google for the quote and found it at [1]. Here is the entire quote:

Lavigne wrote. "The single comes out February and the record in April. I promise you guys will love this record, it is my favorite one!!! And I can't wait!!!!! It is really fast, fun, young, bratty, aggressive, confident, cocky in a playful way ... all the good stuff."

This is from her Myspace page. The "It" in "It is really fast,..." does not necessarily mean the song, "Girlfriend" but I take it to mean the album, "The Best Damn Thing." SmallRepair 03:09, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

so what exactly was the violation that took the video down after 3 months? it was the 2nd most watched of all time, and then right before it becomes #1, it gets taken down? weird.

I've failed this article for GA status. Here are some things to improve or fix before renominating:

  • Information about the song's background and a description of the song's music, structure, and/or lyrics are almost non-existent. Of the two sentences that address it, one is unsourced.
  • Much of the Release and chart performance section is unsourced.
  • Many of the chart positions are unreferenced.
  • The references are neither properly nor consistently formatted.

YouTube all-time most viewed chart listing

This news item [2] is worth a look, and possibly a mention in the article. Since Girlfriend is now poised to overtake Youtube top spot (less than 1M difference from Evolution of Dnace). The article (as written) was confusing. Article seems to indicate that all top songs had a hack (music is my hot hot sex worst offender, hence struck from record. Girlfriend and Evolution of dance both not so bad offenders?!) Stolen Song?

Can we get more citations on this? Also, maybe it should be removed. Anyone who knows anything about the entertainment industry knows that they recycle stuff from 1-2 decades ago constantly to almost constantly, songs, movies, everything. That these guys would sue really shows that they're losers without any paying jobs, not that they're entitled to their own creative work. They probably stole most of their song from some unknown hit in the 1960s or 50s. Oh, and the idea that it's similar to 'Cloud' ? That's beansoup for legal purposes, like Wall-E not looking like Short Circuit. Those people should be deeply ashamed for publicly making such blatant lies.

"Girlfriend" is now showing as "This video has been removed by the user." It looks like the end of the road for one of YouTube's most famous videos, and the article should be updated to reflect this. It seems that the video's new home is on Vevo, where it is quoted as having 130 million views.[4] This is somewhat disingenuous, because this view count comes from the video's time on YouTube. Vevo is a specialist music video site and is not available outside the US at the moment. "Cheating" on YouTube

It is not disputed that in mid-2008, Avril Lavigne fans were urged to open a page which refreshed the link to the "Girlfriend" video every 15 seconds. However, as this Wired News article points out, YouTube was aware of this and denied that the view count and advertising revenue were being mainipulated. Since any attempt to do this would show up as coming from a single IP address, it would be easy to discount the views as meaningless spam. A long time ago, I read somewhere that YouTube bans an individual IP address from watching more than 200 videos per day. I don't know if this is still true, but YouTube probably does have mechanisms that prevent spamming of the site by bots rather than human operators.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:01, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Topping the "Canadian Hot 100"

The article claims that the song reached number 1 on the Canadian Hot 100, but if you look through the list of number 1 singles (on wikipedia) Girlfriend never appears. The Canadian Hot 100 chart only began in June of 2007, a month after Girlfriend topped the Billboard Hot 100.

Ok, I just went and took a look at the source which is referenced for the Canadian Hot 100 chart, and it does not check out! The song did reach #6 in "Canada Airplay: The Hits Chart Top 100 (BDS)", but the Canadian Hot 100 isn't even mentioned.

I also went and looked on Billboards website and confirmed that those charts do no begin until June 2010. What is the protocol for removing incorrect information? Do I have reasonable grounds to remove that line from the chart?--Cjhoyle (talk) 18:47, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, she used to call herself pop punk but then all the people got angry and start calling her a poser so she admitted that she isn't punk and she also lied, saying that she never said that she was punk. That's exactly the point. Wikipedia doesn't take just one person's opinion. All Wikipedia is is various amounts of published material about one topic organized into one collective article about that topic. If one person says she's "Goth", there's no reason not to put it on the article. If the source is reliable (the source has some notability--such as the NY Times, etc), it should be included in the article. If another source says she's Classical, there's no reason not to put that in the article.

This makes no sense

"Songwriters of the previous song later sued Lavigne and Dr. Luke for copyright infringement, before the suit was settled." I have no idea what that should say so I cannot fix it. I could remove the "before the suit was settled" but I feel that there is some potentially useful information related to something happening before the lawsuit was settled. This sentence is indeed rubbish. The lawsuit was never "settled", as both Lavigne and Dr. Luke were exonerated from all wrongdoing. Perhaps the beginning of the sentence should read "Songwriters of the latter song..." but the rest of it is total garbage. ~ [ Scott M. Music Video

The article currently claims: "The song's accompanying music video, directed by The Malloys sees Lavigne portraying three alter-egos, with all of them fighting over the same guy." I disagree. Plagiarism allegations in Drinking with Strangers

So this is how Butch Walker's new memoir says the song was written: Butch Walker plays his song for Avril Lavigne. She likes it so they show it to Dr. Luke. He says, no I don't like it, but ends up using it anyway with a new chorus borrowed from The Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend". He tries to keep this from Butch Walker so he won't have to share credit. When Walker confronts him, he has him thrown out by security.
