The Lost Orwell[edit]

I don't have Homage to hand right now, but I don't remember Orwell stating anything in that book - or elsewhere, for that matter - re. Kopp being

[Orwell's description of Kopp's background as] a socialist militant who had fled Belgium because he had been convicted for his revolutionary activities (smuggling weapons for the Spanish Republic) and because, as a Belgian reserve-officer, he had enlisted in a foreign army, is completely false.

I seem to remember having read it as a footnote in Collected Writings or some web site article on Kopp, but without the veiled accusation that Orwell himself was making it up. I may be wrong - it has been known to happen - but I'd like to see other editors' views on this before being bold and removing/rewriting it. As it stands, it needs at least an inline citation. Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 11:34, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

quotes[edit]

II "George Kopp, the stout Belgian commandante

XI "He was my personal friend, I had served under him for months, I had been under fire with him, and I knew his history. He was a man who had sacrificed everything - family, nationality, livelihood - simply to come to Spain and fight against Fascism. By leaving Belgium without permission and joining a foreign army while he was on the Belgian Army reserve, and, earlier, by helping to manufacture munitions illegally for the Spanish Government, he had piled up years of imprisonment for himself if he should ever return to his own country."

Cleanup[edit]

New insights in to the enigmatic life of George Kopp have come to light through the collaboration of Marc Wildemeersch (the Belgian Author) and Kopp's living descendants. I have inserted an infobox, cleaned up the text slightly to remove "red" hyperlinks as well as unverified speculation and developed a detailed timeline of his life with supporting citations (not shown). The timeline will underpin a sequential restructuring of this biography, to which all are welcome to contribute, of course.Geneus01 (talk) 10:01, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My partner has now recast the life of Georges Kopp into three segments, taking out the conflicting information and placing it in to a factual narrative of known events and actions, combining previous material with the new. Speculation only remains where it contributes to his notability (e.g. his affair with Eileen Orwell). I hope you find this informative.Geneus01 (talk) 06:07, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Additions[edit]

Needed in article are country names and age number. However, remove the number of the spouses as it is self-explanatory. Jack M E 01 (talk) 15:36, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
