Birkenhead Lake[edit]

I noticed this page had no geo coords and was about to add them when I discovered BCGNIS has no entry for "Birken Lake". It does have Birkenhead Lake though: "Birkenhead Lake". BC Geographical Names.. Is this right? Pfly (talk) 17:23, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's listed under, I think, Gates Lake, which is its official name; Birken Lake is what its residents call it, or used to; see "Birken (locality)". BC Geographical Names. which is on the north side of Birken/Summit/Gates Lake (it was originally called Summit Lake; Gates was a local settler, though the valley does ahve a gate-like function/appearance). Birkenhead Lake is a different lake, west on the other side of Mount Birkenhead in a side-valley; Birkenhead Lake is much larger....and btw if you happen to drive up that way the scenery is quite different in that valley than in the Gates Valley, which is what Birken Lake is at the head/summit of....Skookum1 (talk) 18:13, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW if you do go up there for a drive, while the cabins at the Birkenhead and Whispering Falls Resorts are nice enough, I recommend the ones behind the store at D'Arcy, which is slightly lower elevation and much nicer scenery; if you have a 4x4 and aren't afraid of steep and narrow dirt roads, Lakeside Cabins on the point at Shalalth are funkier/older but the scenery is 10x as good; you need to book them though, popular with boaters from Lillooet; otherwise the motel in Seton Portage is very modern and more amenities are at hand.....Skookum1 (talk) 18:20, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah ha, is it "Gates Lake". BC Geographical Names.? If so perhaps the link and coords could be added. I won't be getting up there anytime soon. But someday definitely. Looking into the more remote places up there, like Gold Bridge, made me.. um, pine for the fjords.. or something. I think my parents are planning some trip up there this summer, but have not heard anything new in a while. Pfly (talk) 07:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, it's Gates Lake for sure; maybe I was hasty in not using the official name when I made the article; I called it what I've always called it....as for Gold Bridge, if your folks or yourself do head up there the place to book into is the Tyax Mountain Resort http://www.tyax.ca at Tyaughton Lake or, on the other end of the budget scale, one of the B6B's or the motel in Bralorne; I don't know if it's still the case but the "motel" in Bralorne when I was last there was the old offices/building of the Bridge River Mines Inc., with rickety old hospital metal-frame beds (from the old hospital, which is now a private residence). If they have a camper the options are much more wide-open cf Kingdom Lake or the forestry campground at Gun Creek (on Carpenter Lake). The motel in Gold Bridge (actually it's formally a hotel but one-story so looks like a motel) is perfectly modern and such, and other than Tyax or Bralorne there's no other accommodation to be had in the valley - oh, except for the Gun Creek Ranch http://www.chilcotinholidays.com and maybe another outfitter, both on the lower end of the Tyaughton Road. Amazing country, more than a bit wracked by logging but well worth exploring and - in your case - reading up on. Find yourself Lewis Green's The Great Years: Gold Mining in the Bridge River, publ. about 2000 I think by Tricouni.....you won't be able to put it down....Skookum1 (talk) 13:19, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
