Actually, SMVRR still uses them today. See photo at http://litchfieldstation.com/DCC-University/graphics/pix/SMVRR70.JPG

Preservation[edit]

Can anyone confirm that Frisco #111 is preserved at Heart of the Heartlands [1]? Biscuittin (talk) 09:31, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Build dates[edit]

The text says that the type was built from 1942, while the table says 1947. Which is it?--172.162.50.242 (talk) 12:22, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Preserved 70-tonner[edit]

There is a (somewhat) preserved 70-tonner and granite flatcar at the Barre Granite Museum in Barre, VT. It used to be parked right in front of one of the granite sheds in downtown Barre, but they recently moved it about a mile out of town to the new Granite Museum. I believe it's one of the old locomotives from the Montpelier & Wells River Railroad which shut down in the late 1950's. They used only 70 tonners after steam went away in 1947, hauling granite was a large part of their business, and their lines ran from Barre to Montpelier, and from Montpelier to Wells River (it's possible that it's an old Central Vermont locomotive; they also shipped granite from Barre to Montpelier along a parallel track, but I'm not sure what locomotives they used). Its missing its prime mover and traction motors, and the interior has suffered from vandals and homeless people while it was in town, but hopefully it'll be safer now.
