What?[edit]

I don't see why this page should be in the D66 category. There are no personal or organizational links to D66. -- C mon 22:18, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There was an interesting symposium organized by and a book published by the Wiarda Beckmannstichting about the inheritance of the VDB. There are three parties in the NL claiming to be the successor of the VDB-thought, one of them being D66. See the intro of the article. Electionworld = Wilfried (talk 07:01, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've also heard people within GroenLinks that it as the last vrijzinnige left-liberal party has ideological links with the VDB. And D66 was also inspired by the U.S. Democratic party. Why not put the VDB in the GL category and the U.S. Democrats in the D66 one? Let's not get into this very POV-problematic mess. Strong personal and organizational links are the best and most neutral indicator. --C mon 07:10, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

name[edit]

I`m unhappy with 'vrijzinnig' being translated as 'free-minded'. 'Vrijzinnig' is a political term denoting roughly left-liberalism. 'Free-minded' doesn`t seem to mean anything at all. The alternative free-thinking is misleading, as 'vrijdenken' has strong atheist connotations.

I'd like to submit the alternative 'Liberal Democratic League' as an alternative --Scarpe (talk) 13:30, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Translating names is always difficult. I prefer staying as close to the original Dutch as possible. The party did not call it self liberal democratic league, that would have been the "Liberaal Democratische Bond". So that's a poor alternative, esp. because the Liberale Unie was called "liberaal". Note that the atheist solutions of vrijdenken were intended by this deeply secular party.

Perhaps the best solution is to choose a literal translation (I can live with free-minded and free-thinking.) but to mention the translation issue somewhere in the text. C mon (talk) 14:56, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

could it be an idea to rename the article as 'Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond' - I understand this is unusual - preference being given to English translations - but at least it would prevent one from teeth-gnashing every time one looks at the page :-x --Scarpe (talk) 15:12, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, 'freisinnig' on the German wikipedia is linked to 'Liberalismus' - and also the word 'free-minded' doesn`t actually *mean* anything. 'Liberal' is a good translation for 'vrijzinnig' as long as one makes clear that it suggests progressive rather than classical liberalism. --Scarpe (talk) 15:17, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can't we settle on free-thinking? And just explain the issue very well in the article? Not translating the name would violate wikipedia naming policy, specifically "use English" C mon (talk) 18:16, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If we can`t agree on 'liberal' than 'free-thinking' is the better option, definitely preferrable over 'free-minded' at any rate. --Scarpe (talk) 08:51, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
