Dyce

The page formerly read that von Werra claimed to be based at Dyce in Edinbugrh. Dyce is actually a suburb of Aberdeen. Now it may be that a confused von Werra made a mistake in stating the Dyce was in Edinburgh and so the original author's words were correct, but I just watched "The One That Got Away" yesterday and in the film he clearly states Dyce, Aberdeen. Rewrites

I have rewritten the opening paragraph because it originally said that von Werra escaped from a British prison camp in Canada - but further down the article it states that he escaped from a train.

I have changed the dates to Brit/Eng style - Most of von Werras' adventures took place in Britain.

Was von Werra really an ace ? How many planes did he shoot down ?

What is a 'Hoggarth'? I'm guessing it is what is known in the UK as a pig-sty. 84.130.98.32 23:13, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

It's a place, a little stone hut used for storing sheep fodder in the part of the country. There were lots of them dotted about the lake district sheep pastures then. Jooler 07:25, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Ace?

I changed the first sentence to say pilot rather than ace, since it says later on that the British didn't confirm his ground tallies, leaving him one short. If the Germans considered him an ace, it should be changed back. Clarityfiend 19:15, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Flying ace defines an ace as requiring five kills in aerial combat, so he definitely doesn't qualify. Clarityfiend 00:59, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

BONIFACE

THE DUTY OFFICER AT HUCKNALL WHO PICKED UP VON WERRA WAS NICKNAMED 'BONIFACE' BY VON WERRA - I DON'T THINK THAT WAS HIS NAME. PRETTY SURE HE WAS A FLYING OFFICER (EQUIV. Split Other Cdn Escapes section to separate article?

The section entitled, “Other noteworthy escape attempts from Canadian internment camps,” does not really fit this article. This is a biographical article about Franz von Werra. However, that section is not about him: It is about other German WWII prisoners of war who escaped Canadian detention. Therefore, I suggest that we split that section off into its own article (see Wikipedia:Splitting (shortcut → WP:SPLIT)), or seek another article with which it can be merged ((see Wikipedia:Merging (shortcut → WP:MERGE)). The same thought had crossed my mind, so I created List of prisoner-of-war escapes, to which I've added von Werra and the Angler escape. I'm not sure whether it's better to merge the rest there or put them in a Canada-only article. Oh werra we to move them? Clarityfiend (talk) 02:12, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
