“If I told you, I’d have to kill you…”[edit]

Did this show originate, or did it just bring to the fore the phrase, “If I told you, I’d have to kill you…”? It was a running gag with the Peter Boyle ex-Secret Service character that that was or had beeen his stock reply to almost all questions (including the young Alicia’s question, “What did you do at work today, Daddy…?”).
