Updating this article[edit]

While Dr. Wong-Staal’s article is relatively detailed concerning her professional career, it omits the life details that humanize her and help make her a role model for many young women. The fact that she was the first woman in her family to even work outside the home is very casually omitted, even though it is one of the things that makes her stand out. I also feel like it would be useful to separate this page more into sections, as to make it more user-friendly for anyone trying to find specific information about Dr. Wong-Staal. I suggest having separate components for “personal life” (which is currently non-existent), “education”, “research”, “professional career” and finally “awards”. Maybe the expanded format would invite more people to contribute to the page as well. Given how marginalized women of color are in the scientific field, I think updating and expanding Dr. Wong-Staal’s page would be a great way to continue the process of bringing their contributions to the forefront of popular knowledge. I also find it interesting to note that Dr. Wong Staal is not even mentioned in the HIV/AIDS article in Wikipedia. Maybe even a section detailing any issues she’s had gaining recognition for her work would also be relevant. I also recommend adding a few newer pictures. While the portrait is significant, there are newer portraits that are readily available.207.62.170.215 (talk) 15:47, 15 October 2013 (UTC)NicoleGlass[reply]

I tried to balance out the sections of the article as much as i could by adding more about her early life and education but there was not much information i could find. I also separated the sections so it gives an emphasis on the work she did for HIV cloning and it is easier to find and read. I also added another picture of her just as what was suggest above. I added additional information regarding her involvement in the study of HTLV-1 with Dr. Gallo as she was left off the HTLV-1 wikipedia page. If someone has time, her obituaries include more personal details that are missing from this page that could be added. Another good source for background information is her online memorial page, which has more photos of her early years and videos of some of her lectures.
