Wrong German

As a German, I cannot really unterstand why these "German Lessons" were removed, because I felt them to be necessary. In my point of view, they do belong under the section "cultural references" because languages are part of culture. But! A coinage of "Lebenslangerschicksalsschatz" would not be possible. "Lebenslang" is an (existing) adjective and "Schicksalsschatz" (non-existing) would be a noun that could be "translated" with "precious of destiny". If I were to back-translate "precious of destiny", however, I'd write "Schatz des Schicksals", but even that would not be a common collocation. The other "Beinaheleidenschaftsgegenstand" does also not exist. Since the German "Binnen s"(letter s in beween two words) works like a hyphen in some cases (here it does), this "word" can be "translated" into English. But now you can ask yourselves, if "almost-object-of-passion" is a world you'd find in a dictionary - or worse, use. By the way: This episode is currently being discussed all over German online discussion boards. Some laugh about the sterotypes Americans seem to have about Germans (yelling all the time, not looking friendly, having weired expressions), others feel insulted. Even though this episode has not aired via any legal source in Germany, yet, it did have an impact of some sort. So maybe it would be appropriate to mention it somewhere in the article. --77.7.90.26 (talk) 14:30, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

I can understand why it was removed. Wikipedia has a general no-WP:TRIVIA policy. How I Met Your Mother episode articles get away with having them under the guise of "Continuity" and "Cultural references", and they're not completely inappropriate given how important both things (especially continuity) are to the show, but were the WP:MOS strictly enforced they would probably not exist, at least not without cites for every entry.

That said, if you can find a news article or another reliable source stating that the German used in the episode has been widely discussed, that could be used to discuss the German in the episode's Wikipedia article. In the meanwhile, I'll at least add the German words to the Plot section so the curious can see how they are spelled. Ylee (talk) 18:21, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
