Undue Weight

I added the Undue Weight heading to the history section. The section completely ignores the point of view of the Achomawi in favor of that of the white settlers. The presentation of events is only from the white POV, which entails clear moral implications about who is in the wrong:

"finding only Mr Bowles, Mr Lockhart and Mr Rogers left, made an attack on them, driving them from their homes to the top of Fall River butte, where the three men were massacred, winding up their work by burning their dwellings and destroying all the machinery intended for the mill."

In contrast, moral criticism is absent when it comes to the "settlers", who from an alternative perspective might be viewed as unwelcome guests in the traditional land of the Achomawi:

"no attempt was made toward its settlement until 1855. In that year two men, by the name of Mr Bowles and Mr Rogers, came into the valley from Yreka....
"Shortly after, brothers Samuel and Henry Lockhart emigrated to the Fall River Valley and started the first ferry service across the Pit River. This assisted in making a link in the first wagon road from Yreka to Red Bluff."

These developments may have had immediate and eventual consequences for the Achomawi, yet their stake in them is absent from this account.

Achomawi#European_contact gives the greater context for conflict:

"In 1828 fur trappers and traders visited Achomawi land. It wasn't until the 1840s and the California gold rush when outsiders began to arrive in large numbers and taking land and disturbing the Achomawi lifeways. The Rogue River Wars in 1855-56 brought a strong U.S. military presence to the area, as well."

Indeed. The text was, as lear as I can tell, lightly paraphrased from an 1881 text [1] , and the embedded bias within it is probably not easily resolved without simply rewriting the information from scratch. I have removed it. (I briefly thought there was a copyright issue, but of course, the original text is too old for copyright to be a concern.) --j⚛e deckertalk 22:14, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
