grammar[edit]

Date: 31 March 2006. English Grammar in second half of entry improved and use of tense made consistent. To judge from the type of inconsistencies in the english, the entry was probably originally written in german. A link to the novel "Arrowsmith" by Sinclair Lewis, which was based on d´Herelle´s and his use of bacteriophage to treat epidemic disease has been added. - psymm

Birthplace ???[edit]

This page states that d'Herelle was born in Montreal, Canada, as do several other sources. The French WP page (fr:Félix d'Hérelle) states that he was born in Paris, in accordance to what is found in the Pasteur Institute archives : [1].

Who is right ? Where was Félix d'Herelle born ?

Brittanica also says he was born in Montreal. But: 1) Montreal is in Quebec, which became a Canadian province in 1867 ... a -complex- political situation 2) Canadian citizenship laws were a mess for a century.

Consider that in 2016 the eligibility of (Canada-born) Ted Cruz to be a US President was considered 'murky and unsettled' by Laurence Tribe of Harvard. Plenty of others, though, said no. So Felix was born in Canada must be clear ... but whether he was legally, therefore, a Canadian is (so far) an open question. He DID choose to move back to Canada as an adult. And Canada hired him. He had (so it seems) little choice in moving to Guatemala. So, shy of a legal document, today I'm going to go with EB's choice to call him a 'French-Canadian microbiologist'. Seems a fair reduction. It appears that he was born in Paris and first set foot in Canada in 1897 at the age of twenty-four. French Wikipedia cites his birth certificate (Acte de Naissance) as an authoritative source for this, which is good enough for me. - Eroica (talk) 11:42, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
