EDPS' role with the upcoming GDPR[edit]

I'm wondering what the role of EDPS is with General Data Protection Regulation. That is the most important data protection regulation facing the EU, yet there's no mention in this article. In this article's consultation section, this article does link to Data Protection Directive, which in turn has a sentence in its lede that links to General Data Protection Regulation.
