There is a social or humanitarian dimension to this topic that may not always be obvious. There is a well-worn saying "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime," which could easily be augmented to say: "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. Teach him and his neighbors how to restore the fish habitat and increase local fish stocks, and you feed the neighborhood for the future."

It is clear that this article sucks. That is all.

Removed the "Teach him and his neighbors how to restore the fish habitat and increase local fish stocks, and you feed the neighborhood for the future" statement. Wikipedia is not a soapbox. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.26.244.109 (talk) 19:44, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Distinction from restoration ecology and environmental remediation?[edit]

Environmental restoration is closely allied with (or perhaps sometimes used interchangeably with) ecological restoration or environmental remediation.

As the article itself says, there's substantial overlap with these two concepts (which themselves have some overlap). I can see two paths from here - one is to move this to ecological restoration and resurrect an article about the practice that's distinct from the restoration ecology article, or simply redirect it to the latter article. I agree with @Guettarda and will be boldly merging this Environmental restoration article with the Restoration ecology article in a week or so unless anyone has any good objections. I'm planning to work on the Restoration ecology article with a number of experts in about a month, and will address the practice (ecological restoration) vs academic field (resotration ecology) issue.
