Untitled[edit]

What are the hours that the ballot stations are open in a British national election (Westminister Parliament)? In Canada, it historically was 9 am to 8 pm, and now is 12 hours, dependent on time zone (but Britain has one time zone). GBC 03:53, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why?[edit]

I once read that the reason elections are on Thursdays is because it is the day furthest after Sunday (thus reducing the effect of clerical coercion) before Friday (to avoid coercion by employers on payday). This sounds a little too neat to me. Any other ideas? Or references?

How about a mention of the correlation with the time of year elections are held. They tend to be held in Spring or Summer as people are more positive at this time of year and are therefore more likly to think the government is doing a good job. Don't have a reference though!

Local elections not on Thursdays[edit]

I know of only one local election for some years that was not held on a Thursday - it may even be the last election of any kind held on a different day in the UK at the present time. It was a by-election, for the Anglesey ward of Cannock Chase District Council, held on 9 August 1983, a Tuesday. Brought about by the disqualification of the sitting councillor, the writ for the by-election was moved so late that no possible Thursdays remained before the law required that the vacancy was filled. During the 1960s, when I lived in Shepley in the West Riding of Yorkshire, our voting day for elections to the local council of Kirkburton Urban District Council, and the County Council, were on Saturdays. I remember being told when chasing up late voters, not to call people when Doctor Who was on TV, (about 5:30 to 6pm);. When Local Government re-organisation happened under Mr. Heath's Prime Ministership, we became part of Kirklees, the Riding ceased to exist and voting moved to Thursdays. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.100.157.221 (talk) 15:30, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Repeal of the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011[edit]

This article needs to be updated as the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011 has now been repealed with the constitutional arrangements that existed before the passing of the act coming back into force. (2A02:C7F:56E5:C700:6061:A375:6F86:6902 (talk) 09:55, 3 May 2022 (UTC))[reply]
