This page is affected by the Gdańsk (Danzig) Vote. The following rules apply in the case of disputes:

For Gdańsk, use the name Danzig between 1308 and 1945
For Gdańsk, use the name Gdańsk before 1308 and after 1945
In biographies of clearly German persons, the name should be used in the form Danzig (Gdańsk) and later Danzig exclusively
In biographies of clearly Polish persons, the name should be used in the form Gdańsk (Danzig) and later Gdańsk exclusively.
For Gdansk and other locations that share a history between Germany and Poland, the first reference of one name in an article should also include a reference to other names, e.g. Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland) or Gdańsk (Danzig). An English language reference that primarily uses this name should be provided on the talk page if a dispute arises.
Reverts to conform with community consensus are excluded from the three-revert rule (3RR). Only the place names can be reverted exempt from the 3RR according to the outcome of this vote, additional changes fall again under the 3RR. Please use descriptive edit summaries.

Edward O'Rourke - Polish only ?[edit]

Edward O'Rourke was from an Irish family, who moved to Eastern Europe. Edward was born in Belarus, lived, studied and worked in a number of European countries for 63 years. Because of war times he - became stateless - and therefore took on Polish citizenship in 1939, he died in 1943, so he was Polish for 4 years versus his previous 63 years. Some people at wikipedia insist on him being labled as Polish only

These are by the way the same people, who declare everyone with a Polish name to be Polish just because of the name, even if they were born or lived in other countries for generations.

The O'Rourke Family never moved to Poland. They moved to Belarus, the family was established in the Belarus community, without forgetting that they were an Irish family. (Obviously, they never changed their name). O"Rourke was educated specifically with European education, not nationalistic. He served years in the Baltic community. He never lived in Poland. Danzig was also not Polish, as you claim, but it had connections to the Polish- Lithuanian king/crown, which itself was much/most of the time not Polish. Back to O'Rourke, the only time he was 'Polish' was the 4 years of his life and that was due to war neccessity.

Answering myself: Brian O'Rourke of Gloncorick went on exile to France in 1688. His grandson Cornelius was a general in Russian army. He started two lines of O'Rourkes: one germanized, then russified, settled in Livland; the other one polonized, settled in Grand Duchy of Lithuania (today Belarus). The changes in article Edward O'Rourke are self-explanatory], when you read the links. Also read all the info on www.google,com on O'Rourke family. Apparently Space Cadet, you did not do that and you just keep blindly reverting to incorrect info. So please do me a favour and read and think b e f o r e you blindly input wrong info.

The fact that the Polish Wikipedia does n o t state O'Rourke, Polska/Polski or Polska O'Rourke or something of that nature, but only much later after :biskup gdanski, hrabia rosyjski" states polski whatever, that fact should have immediately given you pause- reason to check more thoroughly about his status. Also, if he got the formality Polish citizenship in 1939, when he moved to Rome , where he died in 1943, that obviously means, that he was not Polish. Anyway, have a nice day. Polish WIKI says "Polish cleric catholic" and it still does not give me any "pause - reason" and it does not mean that he wasn't Polish. Born in the nobility family Polish for generations, finally got the citizenship in 1939. Space Cadet (talk) 01:15, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
