First units[edit]

The first GP38ACs were Illinois Central 9500-9519 in February 1970. See http://community-1.webtv.net/ajkristopans/40SERIES/ for production dates. --SSW9389 (talk) 00:30, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most Southern/N&W GP38AC's weren't scrapped[edit]

I count at least 94 GP38AC's being used by Norfolk Southern as cores for creating GP40-2's, GP22ECO's, GP38-2's, and RP-E4C slugs. They've been an attractive core candidate for rebuilding thanks to their AR10 alternator. The vast majority of these rebuilds from the 2000's and 2010's remain rostered by NS and the few that have sold have been resold for reuse and haven't been scrapped.

A couple of other rusting and long stored GP38AC's remain on NS property. And most of the small number left remaining unrebuilt from the 116 GP38AC's from these two fleets were sold off and remain active today on shortlines. Same applies for the four ex CR GP38AC's that NS inherited, with all four being used as cores for creating new GP38-2's during the 2000's (Although at least one has been sold and now works for the Indiana Harbor Belt in the wake of the slimming down of the roster that came with Hunter Harrison, Precision Scheduled Railroading, etc.) 2603:7081:C02:5700:C037:46A:3956:E409 (talk) 11:14, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
