Starting article[edit]

The Duluth pack article is a mess because half of it is about the Duluth Pack company rather than that style of pack (which is made by many different companies). The Duluth Pack company is famous notable, and easily wp:notable. I am solving the problem by "splitting" the article. Actually starting the Duluth Pack company article and moving much of the company material from the Duluth pack article to here. North8000 (talk) 01:09, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the company material in the other article has slightly promotional wording. I am makeing that better as I bring it over, and will further improve that here afterwards. North8000 (talk) 01:35, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The "Duluth pack" was not started by the "Duluth Pack" Company...[edit]

I am disputing this statement mentioned in the first paragraph here:

"The Duluth Pack company is the original manufacturer and supplier of Duluth pack style packs".

The generic word of "Duluth pack" (note the small "p") was not started (i.e., "originator") by the "Duluth Pack" Company (note large "P"), legally known as the Duluth Pack, Duluth, Minn Company. Camille Poirier came to Duluth, Minnesota in 1870 to set up a shoe and tent shop, called the "Poirier Tent & Awning Company". He used and patented the concept of the Duluth pack in 1883, but borrowed many of the concepts from the local Native Ojibwa, fur traders, loggers, and several local designs. Only until 1911, did he sell his shop, including the patent rights to the "Duluth Tent and Awning Company" - a completely different company, right before the patent was about to expire. That company later became known as the "Duluth Pack" Company.

There were several companies in Minnesota that had their own "Duluth pack" style of packs, before 1883 and even after 1911 to this very day.

The Duluth Pack Company was not the "original" manufacturer of the Duluth pack, and at best, is was not producing "Duluth packs" until 1911. The source also dose not state this either. Dinkytown talk 00:31, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dinkytown:Thanks for that thorough info. I think that there are two ways of looking at it. Who first produced what is essentially the particular design, and who first produced a "Duluth pack" by that name. North8000 (talk) 03:58, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@North8000: - Hi North - I do agree with you about those two views. Regarding Camille Poirier, he dose deserve credit in patenting what later be called the "Duluth pack" listed here. His advert when he was still in business is listed here. However, there were several companies in the Duluth area during the late 1800s that were making packs similar to the Duluth pack. One that I know was the "Superior Tent Co." which made their own "Duluth pack", and you often see them on Ebay on occasion. In Minnesota, the "Duluth Pack" was only incorporated with the State in 1988 here.
You can see one of his packs [[ http://warymeyers.blogspot.com/2011/06/1882-camille-poirier-duluth-pack-sack.html%7Chere]].
However, Camille Poirier mentions nothing about his backpack in is autobiography here:
The best way to see when "Duluth Pack" was first used is do a name search in the U of MN archives for the Duluth newspapers to find the earliest mention of it. Take care... Dinkytown talk 19:12, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
BTW before I started this article the company and the Duluth pack were blended into the same article as if they were synonymous. I have gone cautiously in the separation and separation of "credit" for manufacture by that name. Especially since from what I've seen the other people who make this general type of pack seldom or never call it a "Duluth pack". I don't Know whether it's a good or bad move, but your edit takes that farther. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 16:16, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @North8000: - I did see that change that you did in the 'History' page and I thought it was a good move. The way I see it, the "Duluth Pack Company" and the "Duluth pack" should be separate, because they had separate histories from early on. Dinkytown talk 19:12, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Feel free to stick around and make other improvements. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 21:45, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ivanka Trump section[edit]

There has been back-and-forth partial removal of this section. Maybe we should delete that whole section? Seems like more of a temporary news event. Also most of the content (Twin Metals) seems pretty distant regarding relevance. Side note: one of the two references is a bare URL which is dead. North8000 (talk) 17:26, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
