Mary J. Blige (artist)

Mary J Blige is an American singer/songwriter, record producer and actress. She was born in New York City in the Bronx but was raised in Savannah, Georgia where she began to sing at a Pentecostal Church. In hopes to get away from her abusive father, Blige and her family moved to a public housing project in New York but ended up in a dangerous place where Blige herself was sexually abused. During this time, she used music and singing in church as an escape. After years of sending demo tapes to record labels she was finally noticed by Andre Harrell of Uptown Records. Harrell was blown away by her voice and signed her to a recording contract in 1992. Her debut album "What's the 411?" became a success and sold millions of copies. Two years later Blige released "My Life" which she wrote nearly all her songs. In 1996 she won her first Grammy award for "I'll be there for you/you're all I need to get by." Then her third album "Share my World" released in 1997 reached Number one on the Billboard chart. As of today, Mary J. Blige has released twenty-one albums. Her song "Doubt" was released in 2014 with the release of her London Sessions album. Blige met and fell in love with a music executive named Kendu Isaacs and they married in 2003, and she became a stepmother to his three children. Song Reviews

In the song "Doubt" Mary J. Blige's purpose is to send a message of encouragement and to provide hope and healing to those that hear it. It is an inspirational song, that invokes a lot of emotion. The song contains a lot of pain within the lyrics and is sang in a strong voice. The bridge in this song is said to be one of her best "You think you know, but you don't know the half / You think you beat me down, but I'll have the last laugh / I'll keep getting up, cuz that's what I want to do / I'm gonna be the best me, I'm sorry if it kills you." In reviews it is said that "inspiration blows through each piano note, lyric and voice, making "Doubt" another excellent single." Mary J. Review - Kip Ambrose

I love how you talked about the history behind Mary J Blige and how she became popular and furthered her career. Very interesting article and a great stub to improve! Adding the lyrics and then analyzing them in the next section really adds to the stub and makes it easier to see the connection between the lyrics and her empowerment. I loved reading this stub and it provided a lot of good content on Mary J Blige as a person and as an artist, as well as how the song was created.

I would write more in the opening paragraph about the song. You talk a lot about her career and how the song was made but not a whole lot about the song itself. Adding things such as the date it was released, the record label, and how it did on the charts would go a long way! Also, I would put the section at the end “Song Reviews” at the beginning, as some of the information in there is very relevant to the start of the article. Also, I would touch on what was going on at the time in America or in the World.
