Gay Icon Project

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 20:24, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC).

Improvement needed

I think this page should be improved, as it jumps too fast from going to Hollywood to suddenly becoming a star. It doesn't explain about her early singing career and jumps to fame.

Date of birth

Surely time now to delete "or 1924" in the intro? A biography that cites census records seems pretty definitive to me. Does anyone object? Moonraker (talk) 17:20, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Yes, I object. This has been discussed repeatedly (see the threads on the archived talk page). It is not appropriate for our article to make a decision about the sources in Wikipedia's voice when there are numerous reliable sources on both sides. We can argue back and forth about what we think but when the subject herself continues to maintain the later date, supported by numerous reliable sources, it's not appropriate for us to disregard what she and they say. Better to report the disagreement among the sources accurately. --Arxiloxos (talk) 18:14, 16 April 2016 (UTC)
The birth records and census information proves she was born in 1922. (2A00:23C4:638C:4500:4802:4FAA:5812:3708 (talk) 20:29, 30 December 2016 (UTC))

Distressing?

This article states: "She and Melcher were both practicing Christian Scientists, resulting in her not seeing a doctor for some time after symptoms that suggested cancer. This distressing period ended when, finally consulting a physician, and thereby finding the lump was benign, she fully recovered." What is the reference for this being a "distressing period"? Who was it distressing for? If she and her husband were true believers in Christian Science and were abiding by the tenets of their faith how could this have been distressing for them? Unless some clarifications and citations are made this would appear to be original research by some wiki-ite...BTW, the first sentence doesn't appear to be a proper one, but might be if "appeared" is added before the period. Second sentence appears to be amply supplied with commas and could stand to lose at least one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.158.40.94 (talk) 11:10, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Associated Press obtained her birth certificate

Recent articles about this as it's her birthday. "American star Doris Day has received a birthday surprise - she has discovered that she is 95, not 93. The actress and singer known for films including Pillow Talk and Move Over Darling thought she was turning 93 on Monday, having pegged her age to a 1924 birth date. However, a copy of Day's birth certificate, obtained by the Associated Press, has revealed that she was actually born in 1922." (Source: Birthday surprise for Doris Day as she discovers she is 95 - two years older than she thought). Melonkelon (talk) 20:47, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

The article also says "Day said in a statement on Sunday. 'I have never paid much attention to birthdays, but it’s great to finally know how old I really am!'" [1] I think this answers Arxiloxos' objection above (see "Date of birth" section). It's time to amend the article. Jason from nyc (talk) 00:32, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Absolutely. The issue is now settled. "“There has long been speculation and rumours about Doris’s age and we get this question a lot; looks like we finally have the answer,” said Day’s spokesman, Charley Cullen Walters."[2].--Pawnkingthree (talk) 12:19, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Ohio Medal of Honor

I have been unable to find any reliable sources that state Day received the Ohio Medal of Honor in 2000. Based on my brief searches, it appears to be for military service members. I have found a listing of recipients and Day is not listed. It was added by an IP back in 2013. Should I remove it? Melonkelon (talk) 01:52, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Birth name

Now that the Associated Press has obtained her birth certificate, I'm wondering about her birth name. She has said her name is Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff, but the birth certificate just says Doris Mary Kappelhoff. Should it be changed? Melonkelon (talk) 22:32, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

@Mgcamp and Ronhjones: you have both changed her birth name to Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff based on the biography page written on dorisday.com, but her birth certificate shows that her name at birth was Doris Mary Kappelhoff. She has said in interviews that her name is Doris May Ann Kappelhoff. I have seen various sources use the von Kappelhoff name, but I haven't found anything reliable, I'm pretty sure it's not her real name and just an error that has been repeated enough that it's almost become fact. The biography on dorisday.com was written by the owner of the fansite dorisdaytribute.com, so I wouldn't regard it as the most accurate source without further information about the author. Melonkelon (talk) 21:41, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
I'm not fussy either way. So long as there is a verifiable source added to the data. It came up at an OTRS ticket, who pointed out the different names all on one page. dorisday.com is owned by Trilogyinteractive.com/ - that might be an official site, unlikely to be a fan site. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:53, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
According to the Associated Press source cited in the article: "A copy of Day's birth certificate, obtained by The Associated Press from Ohio's Office of Vital Statistics, settles the issue: Doris Mary Kappelhoff, her pre-fame name, was born on April 3, 1922, making her 95. Her parents were Alma and William Kappelhoff of Cincinnati." Dorisday.com is an official website, but the biography on that site was written by someone who owns dorisdaytribute.com, which is a fansite. It was also written in 2008. The birth certificate was obtained by the Associated Press in 2017. Melonkelon (talk) 23:43, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Residence - Not in Carmel

As a neighbor of Doris Day, I can assure you she does not live within the city limits of Carmel by the Sea and probabl never did. Her home is in the county, near the village though. Her hotel is within the city limits of Carmel by the Sea. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DDilworth (talkcontribs) 13:45, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Can you give us a reliable source asserting that? Shouldn't be hard to find, something from the Carmel Pine Cone would suffice. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 18:59, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Date of Death

13th May 15:58 at GMT+1 it is NEVER the 13th of May in California, USA!!! 80.151.9.187 (talk)

Huh? 15:58 GMT+1 (UTC+01:00) = 7:58 UTC−07:00 (which is California's timezone during daylight saving time), so why shouldn't it be May 13, 2019? Her foundation explicitly says "early morning" in their announcement. Regards SoWhy 14:05, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
Because California is located at roughly 118–124 degrees west longitude and rarely wanders anywhere near 0 degrees longitude, even if you're not watching it. Therefore, it is impossible for local time in California to be GMT or GMT+1 any time of the year. Moreover, dates in Wikipedia articles are, according to the Manual of Style, not expressed in ordinal form. May 13, 2019 or 13 May 2019 are acceptable forms, but 13th May, 13th of May, and May 13th are not. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 17:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

LP's

She also recorded the entire score to Annie Get Your Gun, released in 1963, with Robert Goulet. It is said she did it because she failed to land the role in the movie. The role was originally cast with Judy Garland and when she dropped out, Betty Hutton was cast. The film was released in 1950.

Second paragraph

Please correct the spelling of . . . CO-STARRED with Rock Hudson . . . in the fourth line of the second paragraph. Editrite! 203.196.41.161 (talk) 21:50, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Change "Her only child, son Terrence Paul Jorden (later known as Terry Melcher), resulted from this marriage; he died in 2004." to "Her only child, son Terrence Paul Jorden (later known as Terry Melcher), resulted from this marriage; Terry died in 2004."

This will disambiguate any possible interpretation of "he died" referring to Al Jorden. Youglobal (talk) 21:52, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Partly done With the sentence as it is, it's highly unlikely that anyone will think the "he" refers to Al Jorden. However, the death date does not seem particularly important here since the birth year is also not mentioned, so I removed that part altogether. Regards SoWhy 10:18, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

In the first sentence of the Early career (1938–1947) section, please change "While recovering from an auto accident" to "While recovering from her accident". The accident is already dealt with in the previous sentence, i.e. the last sentence of the previous section. 2001:BB6:4713:4858:50B6:645D:BDD1:14E9 (talk) 08:11, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Done – I have changed it to "While recovering from her car accident". I think that if the word 'car' was not mentioned, it would not be clear as to what kind of accident it was, for instance if someone started reading from that particular section. MadGuy7023 (talk) 09:06, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Doris Day parking

I’ve known about Doris Day parking for a long time. I was surprised to not see any mention of it in the article.

Doris Day's paternal grandfather

A Dutch English-language website, cited as a source in the Early life section, claimed that Doris Day, Bruce Springsteen, and Robert De Niro have Dutch roots. Don't know about Springsteen and De Niro, but–as far as Day is concerned–it's not true, and a Dutch genealogy site seems to have received so many inquiries about it that they actually say so on their website's entry for the purported great-grandfather Harmannus (Herman) Kappelhoff: Dit zijn NIET de voorouders van Doris Day (These are NOT the ancestors of Doris Day.) He had several sons but none of them was named Franz Josef Wilhelm. According to geneanet, there are 1,375 Kappelhoffs in Germany (most of them in North-Rhine Westphalia), 756 in the Netherlands, 459 in France, and 54 in the U.S. The name of the Westphalian great-grandfather was Johannn Heinrich. no mention of her affair with baseball player?

Wills wrote in his 1991 autobio that they were lovers ... 50.111.23.84 (talk) 00:04, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

This is mentioned briefly at Maury Wills, where it says "In his autobiography, On the Run: The Never Dull and Often Shocking Life of Maury Wills, Wills claimed to have had a love affair with actress Doris Day. Day denied this in her autobiography Doris Day: Her Own Story, where she said it was probably advanced by the Dodgers organization for publicity purposes." Adding it here would seem to have WP:TOPIC and WP:DUE problems. It doesn't seem to amount to much more than a "He said, she said" type of story routinely told in autobiographies.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:48, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
