Isn't the "citation needed" on the issue of Marlowe's Faustus being based on the historical Faust a little pedantic and over the top? Any number of sources could support that citation, including the citations on the linked article on the historical Johann Georg Faust. 217.86.209.231 (talk) 20:04, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Creative origins[edit]

Faustus name stems from the german legend of Doctor Faustus, who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. These legend is probably based on the real life of Johann Georg Faust (c. 1480 – c. 1541), who appeared as physician, philosopher, alchemist, magician and astrologer, and died by an explosion of an chemical experiment in the "Hotel zum Löwen" in Staufen im Breisgau. There are several grimoires or alchemical treatises ascribed to Faust, some of which appeared during his lifetime and may be considered his work, or plagiarisms thereof (see: Johann Georg Faust).

This legend has given many works in form of plays, musics, ballets, operas, films, comics etc. (see: Works based on Faust). The most famous are Christopher Marlowe's Renaissance play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe´s play Faust.

This is a correct description of the creative origins with enough references in the linked articles! You should not erase or reduce this résumé! There is no need to hide this in an article about a comic figure, which is based on classic works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Christopher Marlowe, which themselves were based on the Faust legend.
