Ding's birthday

Please note that authoritative sources dispute Ding's birthday - the WPBSA site, worldsnooker.com says 1 April 1987, the IBSF site IBSF.org says 4 March. China Daily reported "Ding, who celebrated his 18th birthday last week..." on 5th April. Until we can confirm the date, I suggest we just record that both are noted. -- Arwel (talk) 13:18, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

As the IBSF site is now offline, and all other sources seem to agree on 1 April, I'll change the entry. -- Arwel (talk) 22:00, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Chinese version of name

Resolved
 – Name appears to be correct.

Can somebody check the Chinese version of Ding's name? It looks wrong to me (I mean that first character doesn't look Chinese -- I have no idea how to actually read Chinese!). With all due respect to Ding, I would also have to query his categorisation as a "Chinese athlete" -- snooker hardly requires a huge amount of athletic ability! -- Arwel 20:54, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Yes, that is an actual Chinese character. Not all of them are complicated. :) Livajo 20:56, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)
His Chinese name in the entry (in both simplified and traditional forms) are correct. --ShanqingCai 16:48, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Category fix

Resolved
 – Self-resolving FYI.

I have changed the category to "Chinese sportspeople". -spencer195 22:00, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Ha!

While Googling for data for the previous comment, I just noticed that the People's Daily extensively quoted this article (without credits, unfortunately) when Ding qualified for the China Open last March! -- Arwel (talk) 13:28, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
The People's Daily article cites CRI news. It is unclear to me whether this entry copies CRI news. --ShanqingCai 16:46, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
I would like to point out that the article extensively copies information from the linked site http://www.ding147.com I'm pretty sure wikipedians aren't supposed to just copypasta ad verbatim. A think a re-write is in order KevinCarmody 15:51, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Err, no. Actually www.ding147.com has extensively taken information from this site - I know because I wrote quite a bit of this article and was surprised to find my words appearing there. -- Arwel (talk) 01:57, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
So, in fact it's the other way round, and they should pay you, my dear friend Arwel. Extremely sexy 18:00, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Spelling

Resolved

Shouldn't this article be Ding Jun-hui? — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 23:27, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

His official site, and the Xinhua news report cited in the references, both spell his name as "Junhui". -- Arwel (talk) 00:00, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Excellent. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 03:11, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Ding Junhui

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Ding Junhui's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "2012/13":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:56, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Pronunciation?

Any chance someone could provide an accurate pronunciation of this player's name? There is a bit of confusion about it. RMoloney 02:51, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I have added the Pinyin and this provides some help. I think Ding is from southeast China, so I don't know what the pronunciation would be in his native language. However, the following might serve as a summary in Putonghua (i.e. as pronounced by Chinese national broadcasters):

  • "dīng" rhymes with English "thing" (but more nasal and a high, constant pitch)
  • "jūn" is a bit complicated
    • j like the 'j' in 'just'.
    • u like the second o in Received Pronunciation "London"
    • n as in bun, gun, etc.
    • altogether, the pronunciation of jun is similar to 'June' actually.
    • all of the going quickly from a high to a low pitch (think Homer Simpson's "D'oh!")
  • "huī" is like RP hway but the h is like the -ch in loch (also high, constant pitch).

I should caveat that I'm only an elementary learner of Chinese. Matt 15:04, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

Some corrections: in Putonghua, his name pronounces like "Deeng Joon-Hwei" in English. I am a native Chinese speaker. --ShanqingCai 16:43, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
As is standard pinyin, however every English commentator pronounces the 'Hui' as h+wi rather than h+wei. Dwmg (talk) 15:35, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
I would transcribe it (using the information at Pinyin#Pronunciation_of_finals and other sections) as [tiŋ˥.tɕu̯ən˥˩.xu̯eɪ̯˥]. I don't know about the local (as opposed to Mandarin) pronunciation; I just hope that they're similar. N4m3 (talk) 13:32, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

B-class: I think this is a firm B-class article now. To achieve WP:GA, it will need a (free or at least properly used licensed or fair-use) photo, probably some tighter sourcing, and it wouldn't hurt to have a quotation or two, to give the reader some insight into Ding's thoughts or character. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 00:47, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
