Disputed claims in "sports" section[edit]

The following discussion is closed and will soon be archived.

Ignoring all the uncited and unattributed subjective opinions offered in previous versions of this article (about the subject's "widely cited" "impactful research", or "well respected" input to "preeminent international academic journals", or "widely regarded" views, or claimed "esteem", or "sustained leadership role"s, or being a "well-qualified and respected coach", or being "viewed by many as a potential future Derry senior manager in light of the considerable experience he has amassed in a range of settings", or "well established" achievements in football, or "expert opinion"s delivered on "acclaimed" or "award winning" TV programs (drawing a line for the reader from one to the other), or his "many awards", or "quality, breadth and impact" of his "sustained work"), many of the apparently cited and otherwise seemingly objective claims made in the current article version also don't stack up.

For example, the article seems to claim that the subject was on the Derry team that reached the 1998 National Football League final against Offaly. However, while team sheets for the games in this competition are a matter of verifiable record, I cannot find the subject on any of them. Working backwards, the team sheet for the final (Derry v Offaly on 26 Apr 1998) is here. Hassan not mentioned. Team sheet for semi-final (Derry v Monaghan on 12 Apr 1998) is here. Hassan not mentioned. For quarter-final (Derry v Mayo on 5 Apr 1998) is here. Hassan not mentioned. In what sense was Hassan on the squad which lost the "National Football League Division 1 final to Offaly in 1998"? And where is the supporting evidence for that?

Similarly, the article seems to claim that the subject was on the Derry team that reached the 1997 Ulster Championship final against Cavan. Yet again, while team sheets for games in this competition are a matter of verifiable record, I cannot find the subject on any of them. Again, working backwards, here's the final (Derry v Cavan on 20 Jul 1997). Hassan not mentioned. Rolling back trough the news reports on the semi-final (v Tyrone) or two quarter-final ganes (v Monaghan), I cannot find Hassan mentioned. In what sense was Hassan on the "Derry senior squad which lost the Ulster Championship final to Cavan in 1997"? And where is the supporting evidence for that?

Separately, the article clearly claims that Hassan was a "member of the Cliftonville FC squad that won the Irish League championship" in 1998. But he does not appear on this seemingly full squad list for the 1998/1998 season. Or any other season. And in this interview with Cliftonville manager Marty Quinn, in which the manager seems to cover every material match and contributing player, we find no mention of Hassan either. And so I remain confused. In what sense was Hassan on the Cliftonville squad that won the league in 1998? And where is the supporting evidence for that?

That far too many "references" in other sections have failed verification (beyond what might be expected through linkrot or accidental placement and instead indicative refbombing), unless these issues can be addressed, I will be moving ahead with a SIGNIFICANT cull of this article. Bringing it back to only those claims which are supported by reliable, independent and verifiable references. Otherwise, in all honesty, the author of much of this content (whether associated to the subject or not) should take a look at themselves. And this project's WP:VER and related guidelines. As, frankly, after 15 years of contributing to this project, I would note that this is one of the worst examples of unsupported and self-aggrandising CLAPTAP that I've seen in that time. Rather than waiting, I have just gone ahead and removed the disputed text. Guliolopez (talk) 02:48, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
