Schulte numbered stars

What the heck are these? Some explanation or link or footnote would be helpful, as a Schulte star appears nowhere else in WP or (according to Google) the Internet (unless you count Schulte Stars Again But Wright State Topples Loyola), making me think this is a pretty obscure term.
