proposed merger with Courtenay Quarter[edit]

this is why: 1. because more pages do not aid understanding, they inhibit it. 2. because the streets around Courtenay Place are not exciting or noteworthy enough enough to mention, except in extreme passing 3. because the 'quarters' idea is a marketing excercise, not a demographic or geographic classification , and 4. this whole page is a bit too wikitravel for my liking. now this is a bit hilarious, when i created this article (Courtenay Place) it was said that it was un-important and should be merged with te aro, being the 'official' suburban area containing this place. Now official means that the local government have published the suburban boundaries, and thats simply not he case with most of new zealand, its much more confusing than that (most councils dont have official suburb boundaries). The best that can be said is to define 'communities of common interest' and officially published boundaries of such places/localities. I have complied with that, the WellingtonNZ is a wholly owned company of the Wellington City Council, and that is our local government, and that should be good enough. All areas are substantively different, and exist for different reasons; Te Aro is an official suburb, Courtenay Place is famous world wide, Courtenay Quarter is an official geographic tourism zone (published by Wellington NZ for a plethora of other purposes, such as giving the tourism providers and tourists alike, a feeling of belonging, an easy way to talk about their destinations and what they did there when they got home. Its easy to merge or delete, but MUCH more effort required to dig around and get the info and supporting references and verifications, lets see, which method is best for wikipedia??? Oh thats right, it cant be here unless its verified, so if no one verifies it, then it simply doesnt exist, like the tree in the forest that fell and no one heard it so it didnt make a sound... All the research on learning and user friendliness points to more pages with less content are better, so where is your proof that more pages are worse? Those streets that may be not exciting are steeped in the history of a settlement/city/country in the making, and are worthy of mention in many cases, but that may also take a bit of real work and committment to sharing and finding the verification thats so precious here. Of course that could all go in the Te Aro and other city suburban articles, but then what about tribal/iwi boundaries, are they going to be examined in this debate? The only 2 truthful outcomes would be to 1/ fix Courtenay Quarter article, or 2/ delete Courtenay Quarter article as being not notable or some such reason concocted for the purpose. merging is not a real solution, when looked at in the cold hard light of fact. moza
Both The C. 1/4 and the C. Place article are essentially just lists of places to go, and this can be done in Te Aro, if it needs done at all. The best things I can think of are: to make an article called Wellington geographic tourism zones, which if you do it well enough would probably escape deletion, or better yet, a page called Positively Wellington Tourism. The concept of "Quarters" is a marketing construct which, frankly, has not gained traction except in the overactive imaginations in city corp. This I think is evidenced by the fact that none of the other pages have yet launched into existence.
It's also a bit wacky to have *five* quarters (unless you subscribe to the theory that Wellington is greater that one city.
The Courtenay Place page nicely captures the entity that is Courtenay Place from the Deluxe to Pigeon Park ... it is not "just another street". And it is a street that is part of Te Aro one of the Wellington Urban Districts. Bruce.staples (talk) 07:56, 19 November 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Is this article needed?[edit]

From what I can see, most of the facts in this article are already included in the Te Aro article. Also, i'd argue that Courtney Place is just a street, and not an area. It's certainly not counted as an area of any sorts on wises.co.nz. And if it is just a street, then things like Te Papa aren't part of it... Dwayne Kirkwood 00:29, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

http://www.wellingtonnz.com/Maps/WellingtonEducationMap.htm [1] generally referred to as Communities of interest. Wises? how about Wellington City Council? or Statistics New Zealand? less surgery please. Redirect this to Courtenay Quarter, and copy it there or whatever, kill it if you really want, but I see lots of building to be done. moza 00:45, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just offering an opinion based on what I see. The Te Aro article appears to cover all of the areas, and realistically this article would only double up a lot of the content. How much interesting and useful information could really be added to this article?
If you do want to continue, the 'title' of the area needs to be decided, the article is called 'Courtenay Place' but it's referred to as 'Courtenay' and 'Courtenay Quarter' throughout. Multiple names will confuse those not fimilar with the area, which should be the main traffic (if you're familar, why look it up afterall). Dwayne Kirkwood 08:04, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Courtenay Place Article Major work done[edit]

ok now we have a real article, lets beat it into shape, no more trivial pursuits. This article links to many nz categories pages, some of which I had to create to fulfil the intent of wiki for NZ. So now I learn about categories and how they work. There has been a category for streets and squares all along!!! as far as i can tell this article has more research and cross referencing than most, and is in need of cosmetic adjustments. Auckland was a bit ahead of us in this guys, lets pull together now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wellington There is plenty of room for buildings and areas of significance for all to work on. The Embassy Theatre is worthy of it's own page. One of the things I notice when i research topics such as this, is the lack of NZ pages about notable New Zealanders. Imagine if the CourtenayPlace.com street scroll worked like this one in Auckland: Street Scroll Thats the best functionality I've seen for such a purpose. moza 17:36, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How many Courtenay Places exist that have notability for inclusion?[edit]

Google search of Courtenay Place turns up 1.4Million results with the top 50 mostly about Courtenay Place, Wellington, I can't find any others easily... and why would i try harder?moza 07:25, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

actually i was wrong, sorry, #9 is about the English place, but only the wiki article.moza 07:34, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Too many photos![edit]

I mean, do we really need a photo of blanket man? That big white space is just annoying. Willnz0 23:23, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

oh well at least you asked, thats good. You could have adjusted it so the white space reduces perhaps? how many precisely is too many, isnt a picture worth a thousand words? have you been there? how would people from around the world know what it was like without pics? have you given any pics to wiki? how many have been deleted from articles that youve contributed them to? we need about 100 pov's to get near a statistically valid result so thats not gonna happen is it. There are more than a million articles to pick on and go deleting or building, and nearly all of them need it more than this one, so i'm a little perplexed. anyway, thanks for not rushing in and messing it like ive seen done before, yours is a much better approach. I would like to understand though, how anyone can have the notion of too many pics, why and how do you arrive at that? Another point is that the white space changes according to the computer and a pile of settings that you use to look at it with, and its different for many others, so be aware of that please. go here User:Paul_Moss/gallery and you really will see a page with too many pics, but i dont have anyone to help sort it. moza 11:57, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed photos that don't actually show the street and reduced and repositioned the thumbnails to remove that annoying white space. I've left Ben Hana's pic in as he is strongly identified with the area. Along with other edits I've made, I hope this goes some way to satisfying the 'cleanup' requirements, although the article could do with some more attention.
