Merge[edit]

Shouldn't this article be merged into Maroochydore? There is no census data for the area. If it is to have its own article then it needs references which discuss Cotton Tree as the primary subject not a just a link to a club, library or caravan park. Also who gives the dubious names to the surf breaks and who generally recognises the boundaries as stated. - Shiftchange (talk) 00:56, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nope. We don't delete articles on gazetted localities/towns, which Cotton Tree is, anywhere. We don't merge it with Maroochydore because it's formally a completely separate place, and that kind of original research-merge would make a royal mess of Australian Wikipedia's increasingly-good locality-level coverage. Census data is not a useful concept here because the ABS does not release data on any town under 250 people, and sometimes doesn't even release data, or at least useful data, for even larger places (the ABS uses cracked census districts not used in basically any other government context). The boundaries as stated are gazetted in regulation by the Queensland Government; I can't find locality maps because the Queensland Government website is useless, but I have confirmed that it's a gazetted locality. User:Kerry Raymond would be a good person to ask if you're interested in those kind of resources for Queensland. The Drover's Wife (talk) 01:50, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are both right! Cotton Tree is gazetted as *unbounded locality* (aka neighbourhood) and is within the gazetted locality of Maroochydore. So while we do have articles on gazetted localities as a principle, I think the case for articles on neighbourhoods is less clear and probably should be based on the usual notability rules. I note that the Queensland Heritage Register has a listing for the Cotton Tree Caravan Park as being in Cotton Tree (rather than Maroochydore) which suggests that Cotton Tree was gazetted as a suburb or bounded locality at the time of listing and perhaps has only recently been downgraded. Certainly I think many people would know of Cotton Tree because of the beach and the caravan park; it's always been a popular holiday spot. I'd be inclined to just make it clearer that it was part of Maroochydore officially but leave the article in place since there appear to be a number of citations. As for surf breaks, yes these are unofficial names of course, but in my observation, they seem quite stable over time. Whether there are citable sources for these particular tasteful ones I cannot say, but I would expect surfing magazines etc would talk about surf breaks.
