Flint[edit]

There's apparently a far earlier discussion of the Cote Bottom flint by Arthur Beckett in The Sussex County Magazine, volume 9, 1935, if search engines are to be believed. Uncle G (talk) 23:05, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I may be able to get access to that in one of my local libraries, although not necessarily this week. I'll put it on my list to investigate. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 09:11, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Worthing District[edit]

I can see that it's to the east of the Clapham CP parish boundary on the maps, which have "Worthing District" to the east of that boundary. I can go to this which claims to use Ordnance Survey data and see Cote actually marked within the District. I am confident that this is true. But I cannot yet find anything saying in words that Cote is nowadays part of Worthing District. Uncle G (talk) 10:20, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gaster[edit]

It's not enough by itself, but if ever we do do a biography of Christopher Theodore Augustine Gaster (1878–1963 and born in Putney), there's a potted biography to be found as 1 source in the Proceedings of the Geological Society of London. There's also something in the World Palaeontological Collections by the British Museum (Natural History), according to search engines. Uncle G (talk) 10:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Walcote[edit]

The snippet view from the search engine isn't encouraging as to its expertise, and being from 1919 it pre-dates the 1929 "names" publications and probably is reporting some pre-cursory work, but volume 59 of the Sussex Archaeological Collections Relating to the History and Antiquities of the County has something about the name "Walcote". It might be nothing, though. Uncle G (talk) 13:56, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Munery's Copse[edit]

I suspect that there's more to be found on this, but I haven't really looked. There's something about a lime kiln there, somewhere in the Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, that needs to be added, for example. Uncle G (talk) 14:02, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging @Riparia riparia: who has done excellent work on natural features of Sussex parishes/villages/hamlets and who may be able to assist with this article generally. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 15:13, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Hassocks5489! I do hope to return to helping with the Sussex Wikipedia project soon, but work and other priorities are keeping me busy right now. I don't know anything particular about this area, and the next thing i want to look at is the mapping of LNR around Brighton and Hove. Thanks for thinking of me though Riparia Riparia (talk) 09:28, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The names people in the 1920s say that it was named after someone, too, but I don't have the access to find out whom Uncle G (talk) 17:43, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is Cote Bottom still officially a public amenity?[edit]

Re the above question, I am still not sure. One of the images of it on Commons has a description saying that it is still an uncultivated area, criss-crossed with footpaths, which is a possible sign that there is still public access. Tomorrow I shall try to ring Worthing Council planning dept (or whatever it is called now) and check. It would also be interesting to know whether there is still a bird sanctuary there. Storye book (talk) 18:50, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update. That area is still held by Worthing Council as a public amenity called the Bird Sanctuary, and the land is registered as such at the Land Registry. I have added the info and citation to the article. Storye book (talk)
