Untitled[edit]

Hello, just added some new content regarding Costa-Gavras. It explores his cinematic style, political-commercial approach, and some details of his films. It may make sense to merge down these sections with the existing content at a later time--Jmodel 20:49, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

POV language[edit]

I have deleted a phrase from the discussion of "Amen" which implied that the debate over Pope Pius's stance on the Holocaust was generally considered to have been resolved in the Pope's favor. Even the most ardent apologist for the Vatican would find it hard to read the literature and make this claim with a straight face. I have instead noted that the issue remains controversial, with not all the evidence yet in the public domain. Nandt1 13:20, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You might as well have reworked the whole article, since it looks like an unabashed paean to Costa-Gavras. A critical stance on the directors partisan letfist outlook and choice of themes would be a good place to start to balance its tone. Afc (talk) 23:37, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is the kind of nonsense that seriously disfigures Wikipedia. Why should there be a "critical stance" on his politics or choice of themes? We should just report what they are and leave it at that.
Also, articles are very much disfigured by being littered with demands for citations, particularly when the reader is asked to cite facts about a person's life that are not controversial. I am not planning to remove all the citation tags, but I think that this kind of politicking is very negative and should be deprecated. Grace Note (talk) 02:53, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Date of birth[edit]

The 2 main technical sources (IMDB, Allmovie) give 12 February 1933, yet we're saying 13 February. Why? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 12:44, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The german sites say 12 too. A user has changed to the wrong date (13) in german WP. I think, the info is from here. Then i have changed a better date (12) here. Perhaps the englisch people must be a little bit faster. :) --87.122.133.210 (talk) 06:50, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of name[edit]

The title is the hyphenated Costa-Gavras and the lede starts out the same way. But most later references are to either the unhyphenated Costa Gavras, or just Gavras. The hyphenated Costa-Gavras would be sorted under C, but the unhyphenated version sorts under G.

I agree. I've just now standardized it to the way it appears in the lead, in his films, and in his country (France) and in French Wikipedia, and in official film commentaries. That is, "Costa-Gavras". Softlavender (talk) 03:43, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe related to Gabras or Gavras (Greek: Γαβρᾶς), feminine form Gabraina (Γάβραινα), is the surname of an important Byzantine aristocratic family, which became especially prominent in the late 11th and early 12th centuries as the semi-independent and quasi-hereditary rulers of Chaldia.58.165.242.248 (talk) 05:52, 16 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Polanski Comments[edit]

Why is there a whole section in the article for this? It seems to disproportionately emphasize these comments, when none of his other views are given such attention.--LouMichel (talk) 17:35, 1 June 2020 (UTC) 2600:1700:8D40:9B60:ACD0:3226:645C:F11 (talk) 03:06, 19 November 2020 (UTC) Because none of his other views defend a person accused of raping a minor, or imply that it wasn't that big a deal because she "looked twenty-five" (which she did not)? This goes somewhat beyond holding a different opinion on a political subject. If an American director said something similar, you can bet it would be front and center.[reply]

I think you're making a highly subjective assertion. Costa-Gavras has expressed opposition to wars that have killed hundreds of thousands of children, criticized dictatorships that have tortured/ abused countless thousands, etc. Why is a sexual assault committed by Polanski more significant than the mass violence of those other events? Why are comments on large scale murder, rape, torture, etc. by soldiers and governments just "a different opinion on a political subject" but comments on the actions of a celebrity are of the utmost importance? You're absolutely right to find Costa-Gavras' opinions on this specific issue offensive, but I also think this is an example of people's obsession with celebrity news. Somehow the criminal behaviour of a rich movie director (and what people think about it) is prioritized over atrocities on a much larger scale. I removed the section because it seemed wrong to me to have an entire section on some remarks about another celebrity, but to mostly exclude Costa-Gavras' decades of political activism (activism that in many ways has defined his career). Also, there have been many American celebrities who have defended Polanski, and they actually do not have separate sections devoted entirely to those comments. I'm totally in favour of including Costa-Gavras' statements, but it should be in the context of his other opinions, many of which seem more relevant to his life and filmmaking.--LouMichel (talk) 22:25, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
