Wikification efforts[edit]

I've done a little wiki-rearranging here by adding some lamely labeled sections. hjweth (talk) 18:10, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed image[edit]

Cora with Stephen Crane circa 1896

User:Yllosubmarine, perhaps you can provide some detail on the dispute you mention in your edit summary? ~ Alcmaeonid (talk) 13:35, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've asked for supporting info and you have given none. I'm reinstating the image for this and another reason. Even if one critic has doubts others do not. And it is the only picture we have. It is relevant. I will change the caption to reflect the doubt. ~ Alcmaeonid (talk) 13:59, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for not responding sooner; I did not previously have Cora's article watchlisted, and was not aware of this discussion because I had not been alerted of its existence. The doubt re: the image is something that has been brought up by several critics, not just one. Chief among the naysayers is Stanley Wertheim, one of the most prevalent Crane scholars around, who correctly points out that the woman looks little like Cora, and another image from that same event depicts Cora (looking decidedly more plump and wearing different garments) with Henry James. It may in fact be Brede's proprietress that Crane is standing next to, or at least that's Wertheim's adamant argument. However, I did originally upload the image in question a few years ago, under the mistaken belief that it was Crane's common-law wife, so it's seemingly a common misunderstanding. The updated caption is okay, although I think if this article (which is in serious need of help) were to include an image, it should include one that is proven to be the woman. Undisputed images of Cora exist, so I'll see if I can scan one or two examples from the sources available to me. María (habla conmigo) 18:41, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know anything about this picture? ~ Alcmaeonid (talk) 01:16, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
According to Gilkes, it's from Syracuse University's Crane collection and is tentatively dated to the time when Cora was married to Stewart -- although it isn't dated as such by Syracuse. This image, however, is definitively dated to 1892; there's an inscription on the full-sized version written by Cora to her Aunt Mabel. If you thought it useful, I could scan and upload a better copy of this particular portrait? María (habla conmigo) 20:02, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it very useful & would appreciate any effort you could make along these lines. I agree with you that the article is indeed in a sad state. Having both (or all extant) images available to editors would be the ideal. ~ Alcmaeonid (talk) 20:51, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! I'm actually on vacation at the moment and won't have time to do so until after the holiday weekend. I'll post the image here once I have it uploaded. Thanks for the help, María (habla conmigo) 01:17, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
