It may have a Frankish origin[edit]

It seems plausible that the name comes from a Merovingian king named Childebert. (Supposition: This may refer to an implement that strikes (sword, ie hilt) or helmet - flashing sword, bright helmet both seem compatible with the warrior character of Frankish kings. Note that colonel and column, also military terms, come from the same PIE root *kel- and I personally would favor helmet.)
