The pine trees[edit]

And other things I have removed for a variety of reasons. The pine tree theory reads to me as being the concoction of local boaters upset at the loss of shade trees at their leisure spot, blaming the long-term erosion of the island due to their disappearance. I believe its inclusion would violate WP:UNDUE since it is both unsubstantiated by reliable sources, as well as because it contradicts other reliable sources. Specifically:

  • I can't find mention that "all the trees" on Coconut island were pines outside of this wikipedia article.
  • The article claimed that the pines protected the island from erosion, but googling around shows many sources stating that Australian pines are believed to contribute to erosion. They have an extremely shallow root-systems which often requires them by law to be removed if near structures since they blow over in high winds, and they out-compete and shade out plants with deeper root-systems. Various sites stated that Australian pines planted along coasts undergoing erosion merely allow the sand and sediment beneath their roots to be swept away, and the tree subsequently topples over once enough of the shore is removed.
  • The island was already demonstrated to be rapidly shrinking by a coastal engineering report before the pines were removed.
  • I see no reference to dredging equipment in 2005, and don't see its relevance anyways.
