Untitled[edit]

Anybody got any sources to check the James Graham who was MP for Cockermouth from 1802-1812? By the dates that Rayment gives it seems to be the same man who was MP for the Wigtown Burghs 1805-6, but he was elected there in August, after he had been re-elected in Cockermouth, and the next MP in Wigtown was not elected until November the following year, which sounds a long gap if it was simply a case of an MP choosing between two seats. I am beginning to suspect that the Cockermouth MP may have been Sir James Graham, 1st Bart, who became MP for Carlisle at the same time this James Graham stopped sitting for Cockermouth. I suspect the dates in Rayment's baronetage are wrong, because he has identical dates for the 1st Bart of Kirkstall and the 1st Bart of Netherby. And I'm wondering which of those two was really MP for Carlisle and which for Ripon - the Cumberland baronet whose son sat for Carlisle and for the county sounds a likelier bet than the Yorkshire baronet who must have lived near Ripon? Any ideas on cross-checking? Rgmmortimore 21:32, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
