? "Village"[edit]

This article describe Cockercombe as a small village, however I can find no evidence of a collection of buildings, church or any services. I think it is a valley in a wooded area which seems to support forestry etc. Can anyone find any sources describing it as a village?— Rod ^talk 17:57, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that my coords were a bit off. Cockercombe was a bit hard to find (there is one apparently near Bridgwater) so this one accidently landed in a wood. The new coords I have given looks more civilised! Jaguar (talk) 19:06, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

But at least the previous one had the name Cockercombe on it (on the map I was looking at) but this one doesn't on street map. I'm confused. Have you found any other sources which describe the place? I noticed the red link by seeing a change at Quantock Lodge which took me to Cockercombe tuff & the red link for the place.— Rod ^talk 19:11, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I use OS Grid Refernce Finder to get accurate coordinates. The location of Cockercombe I used can be found here. I also use Google Earth to actually look at the name places but I'm not near my computer at the moment. There are very few sources on Cockercombe but one of the first I found describes the 'village' as "Nestled in Somerset's most dramatic valley at the foot of the Quantock Hills, Cockercombe is one of four luxury timber-clad holiday villas." Which also confuses me! The wooden valley bit seems to make sense as Cockercombe tuff is near it. Jaguar (talk) 19:20, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to be just an advert for a cabin. This is a Forestry Commission office (but includes coords), and this about house prices all seem to put it where you had the coords originally. More confused.— Rod ^talk 19:30, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Deer Rut & this gives OS grid Ref ST182378. Lots of these are based at the Forestry Commissions West Somerset Team Cockercombe Office. Therefore I think it is the valley (or combe) in which the FC has its office.— Rod ^talk 19:51, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good idea. I'm happy for it to go through a AfD process if it just turns out to be a holiday villa rather than an actual village or hamlet. I will look for other sources but I would think deletion of the article would be a good option. Jaguar (talk) 21:33, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cockercombe is indeed the Quantock combe where the Forestry Commision office is. A very few dwellings use Cockercombe as their postal address which may account for it being listed as a hamlet. I can write a short article here, I know it well, I even lived there for a short while and certainly there are things of interest to say about it. I will do so but not tonight.
