"The bushy regions of the common are used by homosexual men for "cottaging" activities" is a very unfortunate turn of phrase... Thermaland 18:48, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Nsaa reverted this edit (bold added, strikeout removed) "Some parts of the common are used by homosexual men seeking anonymous sex in public places for ("cottaging")activities." Why? It seemed a reasonable clarification to me. Which part is deleterious to the article? Pbhj (talk) 03:01, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Please discuss here before making a revert. Not everyone understands the euphemism "cottaging". Also that might be too narrow a term as it refers to homosexual acts between males in public toilets whilst references (eg as above "bushy regions") appear to suggest such acts on Clapham Common are not confined to the toilet blocks. Pop culture

The references are pretty weak. I removed one to "the squeeze" for this from "Up The Junction":

:I never thought it would happen

With me and the girl from clapham
Out on a windy common
That night I aint forgotten
When she dealt out the rations
With some or other passions

It might mention clapham common, it might not. It's certainly not of any note. This whole section could go really. Pbhj (talk) 02:57, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

In the news

The previous bit about Ron Davies may have been libellous. I've reworded with a quote from the Guardian. Pbhj (talk) 02:57, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Restoration of the bandstand

Could someone check that it was indeed Lambeth Council that part-funded the restoration of the bandstand? This seems odd given that the Nicholson Street Atlas of London shows the bandstand clearly lying within the Wandsworth side of the common....or were Wandsworth not bothered about it despite being on their land? Thanks.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.142.202.115 (talk) 08:52, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

"parishes"?

It was historically common land for the parishes of Battersea and Clapham, but was converted to parkland under the terms of the Metropolitan Commons Act 1878.

Parishes? What exactly does this pertain to? Were there buildings on the site? --208.65.188.23 (talk) 01:36, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

No – the adjacent parishes (local boundaries before 1878, established centuries before as being within the parish of each village's local church – probably St Mary's, Battersea and St Paul's – formerly Holy Trinity, Clapham) may have shared the common land. Agendum (talk) 16:43, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Abbeville

I live in Abbeville Road and no one calls it Abbeville Village apart from Estate Agents trying to flog houses. Therefore I've removed reference to this fake local name. 13:24, 22 September 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.105.194.16 (talk)
