Triva Section and Copy & pasted text

User:COMPFUNK2 recently added a template that warns against using trivia sections and links to Wikipedia:Avoid trivia sections. I moved some of the biographical trivia into the biography section and re-wrote a part of the biography section that was far too similar to the text in the linked source. User:CathBellFan reverted many of the these changes. Personally, I think both my changes and COMPFUNK2's changes improved the article, but instead of just reverting it without discussion, I'd like all interested parties to discuss the issue here. I did replace my text that avoided the copyright violation from the linked source. Enuja 23:45, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Categorization of Ms. Bell

I'm inclined to think this woman's not an "Iranian woman" in the classic sense. Yes, she has an Iranian mother, but she has no ties to Iran otherwise - no education there, no citizenship, etc. I'm removing here from the Iranian categories and from the List of Iranian women as a result. If anyone wants to discuss, feel free! Sidatio 23:48, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Why remove her from Category:Iranian-Americans and not Category:Scottish-Americans, especially as she was raised by her mother? Also, if she's not even going to be categorized as an Iranian-American, the lead section probably shouldn't describe her as an Iranian-American actress. Personally, I think the best representation would be to take the Iranian-American bit about of the lead, remove her from the list of Iranian women (it's not even Iranian Americans), and leave her in Cat:Iranian American. I have no opinion about her presence in Category:British Iranians. The article states that she is fluent in Farsi, and she is featured in the info-box at Iranian American so she certainly seems to fit the category of 2nd generation Iranian-American to me. You know, that makes a great deal of sense. It could be said she's a 2nd generation British-Iranian-American, but I am NOT about to create a category for that. At least it's not like trying to figure out Tiger Woods' place in nationality, right? Sidatio 02:42, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I added the part about Scottish-American because, as a citizen of the Crown, her lineage is derived paternally. Of course, it's not important - just thought I'd say why. She should be considered Iranian-American. In designations like that, the first descriptor represents the ethnic heritage while the second represents the nationality/citizenship. Her current citizenship is American and her heritage is part Iranian. Therefore, she should be considered Iranian-American. Just because she's never been to Iran doesnt make her not of Iranian descent. Many people are considered of certain ethnic groups despite not having a good understanding of the cultural norms of that group. Bell actually speaks Farsi and speaks it fluently, so that makes her more of a candidate to be identified with Iranian rather than others whom do not even speak their native ethnic languages. 161.185.1.100 (talk) 20:31, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Two issues

1. The article says: "She had a thyroid gland removed from her neck in her 20s". Humans only have one thyroid gland as far as I can tell. So did she have the whole thing removed or just part of it?

2. The external links sections provided co-ordinates for her house in California. This appears to violate the "Privacy of personal information" section at WP:BLP so I will delete it.

Iranian again???

Hey guys! Especialy Iranians (Persians)! Why do you prefer to change "azeri" to "iranian"? Yes, of course Ms. Bell's mother is from Iran but she is not of Iranian nationality, she is Azeri. There are about 20 mln. Azeris in Iran (second largest ethnic group) and her mother is an Azerbaijani woman originated from Iran. Azeris and Iranians and two different nationalities have two different origins. I think to write "Iranian" implying her nationality is not correct. "Azeri" is more correct. We can write that she is Iranian implying her relation with Iran and no more!. I am ignoring your inflammatory comment and hopefully the admin will take care of that. Also your sources do not say that. Second she describes herself in those sources as Iranian and Persian [1][2][3]. And she speaks fluent Persian and teaches her own daughter Persian. Third Iranian Azeris are Iranians (see the definition in the www.dictionary.com )because they are from Iran and have been part of Iran since the formation of an Azerbaijani Turkic speaking ethnic group between 14-16th centuries. She is not of Azerbaijani nationality (from the Caucasian country) but of Iranian nationality/citizenship and if you have a source that she is Iranian Azerbaijani from Iran, then add it, but it seems she is teaching her daughter Persian and spoke Persian in her household. --Nepaheshgar (talk) 16:23, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Her mother is not from the country of Azerbaijan, meaning that her nationality is not Azerbaijani, but Iranian. Besides, there is no proof that her mother is an Azeri anyway. All we know is that she is from Iran. Iran has many different ethnic groups though, such as Persians, Azeris, Kurds, Mazandaranis, Hazaras, etc. - but their nationality is Iranian. My father is Persian and my mother is Azeri, but that still doesn't not make me Iranian by nationality. In any case, Azerbaijani's are ethnically Iranian, too. I am Iranian-American, raised in the U.S. since I was a month old (U.S. Citizen), and we have Azerbaijani-Iranians in our family. Most are only culturally Turkish. DNA tests show no real difference between Azerbaijanis and other ETHNIC Iranians. I don't particularly see why where her mother is from is relevant anyway. Why exactly is she Iranian-American rather than American? Her father is Scottish, but that apparently counts for nothing? Obviously British-Iranian-American is overly long, so just call her American rather than giving special status to her being Iranian and snubbing the Scots. 'British born', by the way, does not in any way count as a consolation. I added that she was a free lance masseuse in 1990. Her clientele included Peter Gabriel. She said this is a magazine interview and also on a TV game show in 1990.

The fact that she was a masseuse can be mentioned as long as no hinting of unconfirmed stuff. User F203 (talk) 19:26, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Added some information about Catherine Bell's background and re-ordered some categories.

I added Scottish background of father which was removed. Source is Good Housekeeping interview Quick and Simple 2007 - link on Lifetime network - exact issue unavailable. I have another article from Good Housekeeping (I think - or some other $1.99 magazine) that mentions her background, but I need to search for it. I will add that source at a later date. Also, I added the fact that she was raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic schools growing up in California. She used to be on the list of famous Catholics, but obviously she is now listed as a Former Roman Catholic since converting to Scientology years ago, so I added that category as well. I rearranged the categories to look better aesthetically, and removed the London actors category since Catherine moved to the United States as a very small child and never went to acting school in London. She is not a London actor like Cary Elwes or Claire Forlani (see category list of London actors).--CreativeSoul7981 (talk) 21:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Why is it necessary to "translate" her name into Persian?"

Yes, she is of Persian heritage, but her name, "Catherine Bell", is quite obviously very English. If you translate "Catherine Bell" into Persion, it will be pronounced "Catherine Bell," so why the need to have it in Arabic script TWICE? She was born in London, not Iran. How come Mila Kunis, who was actually born in the Ukraine, doesn't have her name translated into Cyrillic? 50.192.82.59 (talk) 20:39, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Ethnicity and nationality in the lede.

I have reverted a change of nationality in the lede, which had changed “American” to “British-Iranian”.

There’s a lot of changes going back over the years, but none of them seem predominant enough to leave as is.

The options seem to be / American / British-born Iranian American / British Iranian, etc, but there could be more.

Can we get some consensus on this and leave it at that. Note this is for the lede, so there could be further clarification of her ethnicity later in the text. --Dmol (talk) 05:20, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
